Insurance companies now log policy & vehicle details on a central database (MID, I think its called) and this can be accessed by the police.
I don’t know whether you are aware or not but when the Police do a “PNC” check on a vehicles’ registration some of the information that comes back includes whether or not it has registration, tax etc, and if they have expired then when they expired.
It is why there are forces that have vans dedicated to just reading your registration place (not anti speeders).
