Road Closures

Is there a ‘useful’ site anywhere that actually gives information about road closures that is up to date?

The current situation with the A417, M5, A435, A436 is driving me insane as there seems to be no communication about any of it.

The roads seem to be closed as and when they decide and they all bugger off to the pub.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask

Highways.gov.uk, Traffic England mobile app. But neither of them are 100% reliable because sometimes the people doing the roadworks come across a problem when they either need to close it longer than they planned or don’t close it because they can’t do something due to say some steelwork not being delivered or it being too windy to use a crane.

I use this one, just click on the county you want to view:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/travel/sussex/incidents/road

You can zoom in to look at motorway traffic camera’s, also ferries and train delays.

This one just does motorway camera’s:

Any posting of closures are likely to change.
The notice may say closed a 2 b on 7 days when in reality you get there and it’s only shut 3 out of the 7 days.
It’s an ■■■ covering exercise. According to the signs the m5 was shut but in reality was open

I’ve never found one that’s 100% precise, but a combination of the highways agency website, sat-nav traffic updates, gantries, and overheard conversations in waiting rooms is generally about as good as you’ll get.

Apparently the A436 between the Air Balloon and the A40 is closed at the moment. Unless the road has collapsed I can’t see any justification for closing an A road for roadworks. That’s what night shifts are for.
Talking of Gloucestershire, why has the road behind the old prison at Northleach been closed for what seems like a year?

I use google maps to advise me of delays, but it’s not foolproof. If you get chance, and you’re stopped, close the app and restart it. It told me earlier that I was going to take 1h43 to do 16 miles

Annoyed me as I knew a route to do, that might have added 5 mins to my route, but it was showing all clear until I passed that junction.

I ended up being there 2 minutes after the ETA my Snooper had given me all along

Sent using smoke and mirrors.

I got stuck on that the other day and decided to just ‘go for it’ in the end. AFAICS there were 2 cars parked behind a whole load of cones and flashing lights but no humans to be seen for miles

It also seems that Cheltenham residents are getting sick of the re-direction along the A40 as the other week someone had moved all the signs. Combined with the A417 closures it’s been mayhem

Gloucestershire highways are a peculiar lot who seem to close major roads in the daytime for something that other counties (even Oxfordshire) do at night. They forget they also like to put weight limits on perfectly good roads like the A46 and the A435.
Let’s not forget their bizarre road numbering system around Cirencester where the A417 goes in three different directions, one with a weight limit. :unamused:
