Risk of redundancy

where i work,
2 of us shunters have been put on risk of redundancy,we have been offered a floating driving role,
as we can see the site will still need a shunter of some description,
the floating role we have been offered is,to drive, occasional nights out, and to do any other associated tasks, ie: as far as i can see, shunting,
in my eyes,we would be back on the shunting,as no one else wants this role, but we would be on a much reduced rate from our current wages,
if we were not to take this new made up vacancy, where do we stand?
can we still receive our redundancy pay and leave,■■?
any info on this would be greatly recieved,
regards
tony b

If your current role no longer exists then you are entitled to take your redundancy.

we have been told it wont exist, but they still need a shunter of some description,
i dont understand what they are trying to do

No do a bit slow.
They cant fire you as your Work doesnt exist and let another do it.
I would count it as unfair dismissal,Age,Race or ■■■ Discrimination. Sure i would find anything.

If you are on a better deal than the drivers, with a separate job title, ie Yard Shunter, then they want to save a bit of money by eliminating the Job of shunter, transferring you to a Job as a Driver, in which you will still perform the Role of Shunter.

cut your wage thats what they are trying to do.

will the other drivers have to take turns at shunting or is it just you and your mate

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

look lets be honest the problem is your wage, they dont really want you out on the road they are just restructing your job as a way they can get round the wage cut.

i would have a chat with your collegue about what sort of deal you think acceptable then ask for a meeting with the management and try and thrash something out. if they wanted rid of you then they would just lay you off but they dont so try and bargin.

hi jd
we have been told the drivers are going to have to their share of the shunting, but i cant see it happening,
either way weve lost the good job weve had,

As I understand your situation, the role of shunter is being made redundant. The company has offered you alternative employment as a ‘floating driver’ at your same place of work with other duties as well (which may include some shunting). Having just been in a similar situation myself, I believe if you refuse this ‘reasonable’ alternative of redeployment you may render yourself ineligble for redundancy and you could loose your entitlement. have a look here… direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/ … G_10029844

are they copying stobarts lead  ,this is why the chill depots advertised for non hgv lisense shunters[was on stobarts website, month or two ago],they wanted to reduce what they were paying shunters,so came up with nonhgv lisense scheme,as far as i rember it was about a 5,000 reduction in wages, didnt say the shunters who were already on it were going to be made redundant,as far as i was aware they were going back out on road,it doesnt seemed to have happened up to now for whatever reason, think it was started by lad offering to do shunting job for 2,000 more than he was getting[19,000] shunter was on 26/7,000 ,so obviously this set there mines/calculators going,a figure/saving of 100k was mentioned to me,buti think that would of have to of been for all sites not just chilled,if i was you id call there bluff and just go back on road, its alright parking a truck or two up in the day time in a empty yard, but at night when stock trucks are pouring in it can get manic/no room to swing a cat

thanks ady,
we would be prepared to go out if we had to,but i;m sure they would have us full time shunting, as the floating role, says “any other associated tasks”

tough times ahead i think,
looking at going ltd, self employed, but havn’t a clue what to do at the minute

I think I would be inclined to ask that if you do not take the alternative role will your job definitely be made redundant?
That would give you a clearer indication of how to move forward, it does seem though as it’s all down to trying to lower your salary.
