Right young man

Doesnt it get on your nerves when security gatehouse staff call you this.Im in my fifties ffs.
You know the one,he has a pack of cigarettes on the table, white, middle aged, beer belly, thinks he owns the place…

I don’t know why or what it is, but I hate being called ‘‘Pal’’ by strangers, if it’s a friend who calls me it, in fact one does, it’s fine…
Mate, bud, buddy, my friend …or as you say ‘young man’’ or anything else for that matter is fine, but ‘‘pal’’ I find patronising and ■■■■ annoying.
I usually answer them by referring back to them as ‘‘pal.’’ but I make a point of emphasising it in an unfriendly manner. :imp:

I don’t like anyone speaking to me.

In fact I just don’t like anyone.

Don’t go up to Scotland then will you…almost everybody calls everybody “pal”

i hate jobsworth security guards:

they can see my truck all livered up same with the unit and when i get out the cab walk to gatehouse oh do you have ID, then i have to go back to the cab and get it. point is no one asks apart from the one jobsworth

same with exiting checking if the trailer is empty im doing shunting mon-fri its busy they dont check all trailer on saturday iv been spotted everytime and it has impact on your knee, leg going up and down, why cant they open the trailer door themselves there walking to the back etc i know there on £9.50 hr

The ones I hate are the asking me what am I carrying when it’s a container. All I get is the box and ref number. They get the hump when i tell them it’s their job to know not mine.

The good old phrase “ you been here before “ :unamused:

I hate being called pal, chap, geezer, bruva, lad, drive(r). Young man I don’t mind.

Though I often call people ‘‘buddy’’ myself…and Indian/EE staff I always call ‘‘my friend’’

Yes especially when I go there for the 3rd time and he still asks me the same question

I dont like being called pal, thats a loaded word, its not just one word, its usually associated with a situation that could escalate into a confrontation

I have a mate who addresses me as pal. He also only calls me when he’s in the bath!

We rarely talk as I rarely answer.

I hate being called ‘my friend’.

most who say hello young man are paedos, no joke . if you hang around them long enough they invariably say -where can i find any young boys?

I’m 63, they still call me “young man” :unamused: Some of them are younger than my daughter :open_mouth:

I don’t mind “pal, mate, buddy, drive(r), son (another Scottish one)”, and so on. It’s just a friendly term of address as far as I’m concerned.
They’re unlikely to know my name, so what else are they going to call me? Whatever word they use for anyone they don’t know, but would like to be friendly towards.
“Oi, you!” I find annoying though

Whenever I was in a situation where getting one’s attention, or the acceptable address of one was queried, I replied " as a biker, I have been called any and all names under the sun. I don’t mind any of them, but I won’t respond to “oi” .

I may be a vagabond, but I’m not common.

I usually get ''All right big man, or big yin when I’m up there.

First time I went to Sheffield I remember thinking… Did he just call me ‘‘love’’ :open_mouth:
Didn’t really like being called ‘‘duck’’ in Derbyshire either.the first time…wtf is that all about.?

I knew you were blanking me :imp: ,.and I always make sure I’m on ‘hands free’ when I call you up in the bath as well…pal.

I’m usually one of them that uses Pal unless I’m on shunting duties, then it could be anything from Bud to “you the daft @@@@ that’s parked over six bays”…
Really though I don’t mind pal, mate, bud or whatever, think it’s just nice we acknowledge each other sometimes in passing.

“Right young man” should always be responded to with “thanks grandad”

One greeting did get under my skin not so long ago. I walked past a new driver in our yard and said hello, and he responed “alright lad” even though he’s roughly my age.

I hate being called drive to be honest. Guess, it just depends on what riles you up :stuck_out_tongue:.
