Jakethesnake, his last paragraph is little different to what two instructors taught me, which is take the space you need early and this lets others decide early on whether to hang back or continue coming. There’s a difference between forcing your way through, and encouraging someone else to hang back by taking up position early.
Absolutely. The issue is who gets to the obstruction first. If you get to ‘your end of parked vehicles’ first then take the road, however if it’s your give way and its 50/50 the correct and polite thing to do is wait and let the traffic through, as they had the ‘right of way’ being the unobstructed side.
It is why they tell you when driving a large vehicle think ahead.
Who gets there first was never mentioned. Of course that makes a difference however if the truth be known we are talking about PRIORITY and not ROW.
Years ago when I worked for First there was a ■■■■ of a bit near battlefield. The Scottish power building didnt have a big enough car park so during the day there were cars parked everywhere which made it single file pretty much all the way.
I came round a corner and this ■■■■ in a car kept coming. He stopped in front of me. I pointed to the road he had just passed for him to reverse into (which he could have just moved into if he hadnt been such a ■■■■■ and mouthed "I cant reverse this thing 400 yards). He gave me the v sign, shouted something then reached down and got his metro and started reading it.
No way was I reversing as it was far too tight but I was paid by the hour so I just switched the engine off and radioed for the tower.
After less than a minute, this ned came from upstairs
“Whits goin on driver?”
“Hes not moving. I cant reverse so im stuck”
“Open the door. Am no sittin here aw day”
I just thought he just wanted off but he flew right up to the car
“■■■■■■■ move ya prick. Theres a place right there ye can move intae”
Mr im-not-moving couldnt get his car started and into reverse quick enough!
What I found especially amusing was him giving me the fingers, still trying to save face, as I drove past.
I dont think my cheery wave helped his mood either!
I had similar, there was a road closure andI followed this local tipper lad, who led me through an ‘except for access’ diversion.
Same thing, this prick took it upon himself to not let me past, although there was plenty of room if he’d just moved over a bit.
He even had the audacity to open my door while getting out gobbing off to me.
I told him in no uncertain terms what I would do if he did not leave go of my door, pulled it and wrenched his arm.
He got back in his car and just sat, so I knocked my engine off, feet on dash for effect ) and pretended to read the paper.
Meanwhile traffic was building up both sides, and anybody who came over to me, I just sent them over to him after explaining the situation.
Anyway…a gang was building (just about to get the pitchforks out ) saying ‘‘Do you really expect this big truck to reverse back, when you could just move over’’ followed by a few select names that were aimed at him.
He was getting a tirade of abuse from guys wanting to get home after work.
Needless to say he eventually moved over.
It should have been a non event, him letting me pass, and me giving him a wave, 2 mins, job done, but just a headstrong prick trying to be clever.
I too got the finger as he went off, and same here, I gave him a ott smile and a (very camp ) wave.
