… I will probably give them one more chance…
PMSL!!..dont take this the wrong way but…YOU are going to give THEM one more chance!!!
Lets hope they realise how accomodating you have been and that they show their appreciation for your good nature!!
Or conclude that another mug wants to join them.
yes i think you maybe right
It’s your decision in the end but there aren’t many positive posts on here. There are other firms in the area that may well offer you a better deal.
I know, i dont even live in norfolk, but they are advertising for work out of uttoxeter, which is a lot closer to home. I have been ringing round a lot of places, but with no joy
Spoke to one of their drivers with a bulker on at BOCM Pauls , , was also told no one should bad mouth the Longs or they should suffer the consequenses

If what you write is correct… and it does sound like something the Longs would put about, it just confirms every negative post that has been written on here.
Personally, any transport operation that treats drivers like they belong to some lower order, should not be in business! It’s simply unacceptable behavior in any so called civilised society. If people are bad mouthing them, instead of making empty threats, maybe the Long’s should consider their own actions, and change the way they do business.
I hope they can’t get drivers to work for them, and I hope they lose the business they have at the moment, and good riddance to them when they go. Sad muppets!
(And no, I’ve never worked for them and have never wanted too. But I have far too many mates who have all experienced the Long’s business and personal ethics for it all to be a conspiracy against them.)
Those two outfits deserve each other I did the first dryer that went to Hungary and many others, but let’s just say our respective ideas on credit terms differed greatly

Did Bill Watling have similar ideas on how to run the business?

Not from what I hear! I have no experience, but Watling’s had a very good business and ran a tight ship running top equipment.
There is still one of Bill’s sons running one or two neat looking Volvo’s doing STGO work out of the original yard in Besthorpe. They have an excellent reputation in contrast to the Long’s up the road in Wymondham.

But despite thier reputation they still get drivers and they still seem to have a successful business. So why would they change?

I went for interviews, for casual work, with both of them in the late 90’s but neither of them appealed to me. I then went to Turners at Exning, did three days and my brain was frazzled.

I don’t think they always ran top equipment, I’m sure I remember them running a load of FL’s on Curtainsider and Sugarbeet work. Like many of the local hauliers they were subbying to Stobarts, running out of Britvic for a while.
Never heard to much bad about them as people to work for, just the normal driver talk about bending rules and low pay, and any time I’ve had to go into thier yard they’ve always seemed okay.

I believe they currently have 3 wagons running into Cantley, two are always together.
I worked for Richard & co about three years ago and the wages where acceptable, low basic but max overnight etc. A car hit into me in Germany after being swiped by a Polish wagon and all the ■■■■■■■■ planner in the office was concerned about was me getting the female driver of the car to sign a form stating that is was not my fault. How considerate !!. The other planner name beginning with ‘E’ in my opinion was OK. If you needed any help with routes or whatever he is the man I would ask. No-one else if I could avoid it. My son worked at the Bury depot on Claas and they were completely different, but Bury is in Suffolk so that would make a difference. Had a run in with Richard and told him in no uncertain terms where he could put his lorry, after that he was OK. Let them think they are the bees knees and pretend to take notice andt let their bad attitude drift over your head, once over the bridge on the way out to go over the water or whatever and your mood gets better. I would work for them again cos I enjoyed the job and being away for three or four weeks is a doddle in comparison to the 2 to 3 mths I have to do now.
