Come back to HGV driving after a long period of doing something else, my reversing for a couple of weeks was ? but recently been doing shop deliveries in an artic no problems. Went for an assesment and f up a very simple reverse, not once but a few times.
On the same day, I did a difficult tight reverse in one go and was greeted with “blimey drive, you’ve done that before!” And later on struggled to get in a gap the size of a football pitch as I didn’t afford it the same concentration, another driver walked by and said “just passed?”
Don’t beat yourself up. It happens to us all (I hope), otherwise it’s just you and me
Got to Ecclefechan truck park on Thursday, several spaces next to each other, cocked it up. Got there last night, sod all room, in first go.
It seems to be that when you’ve got loads of room is when you ■■■■ up because I think you think that because it’s going to be an easy reverse you don’t need to put any thought into it.
9/10 i can reverse and park the lorry as straight as a die.
Cant park the car straight for toffee, as the missus always reminds me when i take her shopping
Couldn’t get the mirror less Mercs straight in a bay, seem to play tricks with my eyes but the new MAN’s must be the easiest truck to manoeuvre in my book, steering is just so light and the lock is brilliant.
I hate the mirror cam designs, couldn’t get used to them, felt a right pillock at times trying to get in bays…
If I’m reversing on to a bay, between 2 yellow lines painted on the floor with nothing around I’ll guarantee that I’ll either miss it and have to try again or I’ll get it on and ill be at a slight angle. However reversing off a road, round a corner, down a side street, through a busy yard full of parked cars into an alleyway between 2 buildings…1st time everytime!
But then again, why does it matter if you get in 1st time or 5th time? As long as you get in without pranging it surely that’s the main thing?
The amount of times in S’ton docks I can get lined up with a slot if the ones either side are occupied , but if they’re empty I some times end up aiming at the wrong slot
Or give me an RDC with marked bays to aim at I’m hopeless
Send me to a builders merchants or timber yard and can reverse around them easy
Macski:
How often do you make a mess of your reverse.
Only happens if somebody is watching, guaranteed to ■■■■ it up. .
It doesn’t bother me anybody watching me btw, but I’ve noticed when I do ■■■■ up, I will look up and it’s nailed on that somebody has seen it.
Nobody ever sees me when I sometimes even surprise myself.
Dodgy tendon in left arm doesn’t help btw, that’s my excuse anyhoo.
If it’s difficult I succeed 100% even with a little trouble, 2-3 shunts on a bad day, maybe 4 if new place
If easy, i.e. too much free space in all directions, I need 5-6 shunts to get it right
In a way the hard ones make me focus and it’s easier also because not much choice for approach etc. due to limited space, easy reverse => underestimate, relax and not plan or lack of reference points (empty space all around, no lanes maybe, or faded…)
Yep defo a thing, even more of a thing if there’s an audience.
I always recall one place I used to run Irish groupsge into for transfer. Awful tight bays, little room in front, never an issue. Got there once and there was like five empty bays to aim at as I was ahead of schedule, so the warehouse bods who had the doors up because it was warm just shouted “any bay mate” and stood there waiting. And waiting. And waiting. While I took about five shunts to get on a door
It’s one of them things. There must be merit in the whole psychologically switching off for perceived easier movements
Been there, done that. I went back on the semi’s after quite a time off them. Actually ended up on the bay next to the one I should have been on, but all good as the forkie must have thought the poor old geezer (me) deserved a break. Reversing into Woolies warehouse at Coopers Plains was murder. Blindingly bright sun meant sunglasses on and then when I got so far, take 'em off and try to see into this black hole. 3,500 shunts later I’m in.
Sadly I had been working for the company for a couple of months on and off, very local (15 min from home), work easy, staff OK, but now I can’t go back, although the agency said they will put me back in after a couple of months through a sister company.
I remember doing a blind side reverse on to a really tight bay in full view of a smoking area with 4 drivers standing in it watching me. I nailed it in 1 go and got out of the cab thinking i was the best driver ever. My ego was soon deflated when the warehouse guy shouted to me that I hadn’t opened the trailer doors. I still cringe at the memory of the 4 drivers in tbe smoking area laughing their heads off at me as i pulled the trailer off the bay to open the doors. Cue about 10 shunts to get it back on the bay.
Into my second week now and I find I reverse best when I don’t have someone shouting left hand down etc. Of course the more they bark orders
the worse I get, the worse I get the more they bark orders.

The ones that bark as you put it do not help anyone trying to reverse. Talking calmly and giving accurate instruction may help some in certain circumstances.
Over the years I found the ones that shout and scream are fairly useless themselves at reversing a trailer.

Agreed, but maybe more could be said with fewer words?
I always found that as I seldom even moved a unit without a trailer that when I did so I’d reverse like there was a trailer there. Pavlov’s dogs and all that I suppose.
