Revamped scania R series

I drove a 57 plate Scania R420 the other day for the first time and was puzzled by,(a) why did it have a clutch pedal? and (b) what the difference was between the D and H on the gear knob by the wheel, and (c) why I had to keep selecting first even when empty to pull off cleanly? :astonished: :astonished:

I drove a 57 plate Scania R420 the other day for the first time and was puzzled by,(a) why did it have a clutch pedal? and (b) what the difference was between the D and H on the gear knob by the wheel, and (c) why I had to keep selecting first even when empty to pull off cleanly?

The clutch pedal is because it has a clutch and is not an automatic. It is an automated gearbox with a conventional clutch, which is only used for starting, stopping and manoeuvering. The rest of the time the engine revs are matched to the gearbox revs to effect a smooth gearchange.

The D is for normal driving, The H is for hill climb, It will change gear at around 1500 rpm in D, 1600/1700 rpm in H

You can select your start up gear in the info panel, or manualy select the gear you want.
It will also have a clutch saver, which will cut the revs if you try and wheel spin.

You can lock it to start in any gear you want

Turn the gear dial to H,paddle up to the gear you want and then turn it back to N and it should only drop as low as the gear you selected! It saves it droppng to 1st gear all the time!

Having said that,Scanny sometimes lock this off and the highest gear you can automatically select is 2nd!

Hope this helps-it works on ours!

Many thanks for the info. Next time I get a Scania I will try these suggestions
