Hi folks,
I’m asking this as a favor for my manager and to help a work colleague out.
To cut a long story short a driver has had his leg amputated and has been got his license back restricting him to drive automatic hgvs only. Our fleet consists of mainly Volvos and Mercs with a few Scanias.
Basically my manager is concerned as the volvos have the i shift gearbox which is semi automatic, but in my opinion he would be okay driving either or, the only lorries i think he couldn’t drive on his entitlement is the Scanias that have the three pedal opticruise box.
Just wondering if anyone could shed some light and help a fellow driver out
Cheers
Jonny
should be ok on the 2 peddles .as its just that an automatic…
like you say the Scania OC you need the clutch to stop start… he’ll prob find his car licence will have a similar limit to it unless the vehicle is specially adapted ie hand clutch fitted
The driver should be fine with a semi-automatic transmission, according to DVSA guidance for driving examiners an automatic is defined as “A vehicle in which the gear ratio between the engine and the wheels can be varied only by the use of the accelerator or brakes”, so basically any two pedal vehicle.
6.08 VEHICLES WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
A vehicle with automatic transmission is defined in regulations as `A vehicle in which
the gear ratio between the engine and the wheels can be varied only by the use of the
accelerator or brakes’. In general a vehicle without a manual clutch is regarded as an
automatic.
See for yourself on page 142- DT1 standard operating procedure
Here you go, I’ve found the official definition of an automatic in the The Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations 1999
vehicle with automatic transmission” means a class of vehicle in which either–
(a) the driver is not provided with any means whereby he may vary the gear ratio between the engine and the road wheels independently of the accelerator and the brakes, or
(b) he is provided with such means but they do not include a clutch pedal or lever which he may operate manually,
So a semi-automatic like the I-Shift is fine for your colleague to drive

A big thank you tachograph and nick, be glad to go in today to have a driver get back to work! Many thanks
Cheers
