Renault Premium starting problem

Hi.have got a renault premiun 2007 6x2 starts fine 99% of time but on odd occasion when key is turned starter tries to turn then nothing. Turn key off try again and will start as normal. Have fitted new starter and checked battery terminals but still have fault. Any ideas would be a help.

Bad or fractured earth maybe?

When you tries to turn does turn to slow as if battery flat?

Had a merc once, get in, key in nothing not even a dash light.
Get out and slam door, get back in and all was good!
Battery earth lead had fractured inside the plastic/rubber covering.

no just makes a bit of a clunk but doesnt turn engine

Maybe fit an additional earth strap for a while, and or/use jump leads to direct contact starter and earth circuits direct.

Similarly you could by pass all low current parts of the starter circuit too, one by one temporarily, incl inhibitor switch if auto, and eliminate each one till you find the fault.

Sounds like you got damaged ring gear teeth.
Because the engine stops in the same 2 places 99% of the time (aproachingTDC on number1 or 6) the teeth on the ring gear get worn at these two points. If the pinion teeth cannot get a smooth mesh they baulk. The pull in coil in the solenoid which drags the pinion into engagment cannot then pull the contact on the end of the fork into contact with the starter motor brush contact. The motor doesnt rotate and all you hear is the “clunk” of the pinion hitting the ring gear.

Next time you try the starter the pinion will have shifted a little and will get engagment. The pinion yoke gets full travel and power is fed to the starter brushes.
If you remove the starter you will be able to see the damaged teeth on the flywheel.
It will get worse over time and you will have to replace the flywheel and starter.
Most engines now have a one piece ring gear/flywheel instead of the old “sweated” seperate ring gear.

DAF engines still use a separate ring gear as does the ■■■■■■■ engines in the LF range

good old dafs…once a leyand,always a Leyland…

If you’ve got a different key might be worth trying to eliminate and immobiliser key problem - no idea if this model year has one or not but common enough problem with intermittant vehicles turning and not firing .
