Hi,
looking for any ideas to what this problem could be, I have a 57 plate midlum that was parked in reverse gear and when left the air dropped out and jammed the vehicle in gear, the driver forced the stick into neutral but it still failed to start, contacted a local garage (as we are miles from nearest Renault garage) and they cleared the reverse gear fault although he was having trouble reading the ecu, he managed to start the vehicle but stopped it and it failed to go again. This time it was showing an immobiliser fault, with advice from the garage we had the ecu and immobiliser sent to a specialist who conformed all was ok, with them refitted and an auto electrician check all wiring for any breaks, all is fine there but the vehicle is still not starting and still showing immob fault, Renault suprise suprise are not overly helpful and request the vehicle be brought to them, however this requires a tow which is several hundred ££££s and a blank cheque for Renault.
I cannot think of any other things to try apart from spending thousands at Renault which is why I reach out to here on the off chance somebody has an idea to try
Thanks
Gordy
Have you tried starting it using the spare key?
Hi, the spare key was lost some time ago, however the key we have was sent with the immob to the specialist and they all worked fine, so it isn’t that unfortunately, but thank you for giving it a thought.
Had it on the dafs where the grains of rice sized chip in the ign key has become loose because keys dropped causing non start, open key put chip back in its little slot and away it went, I assume the ign barrel code reader has a very short range?
Yeah we also have DAFs so know that fault well lol, chip was located ok, its looking like a trip to Renault
Bypass it and just fit a trigger wire to the starter motor.Just flash the starter from the main feed terminal on the motor feed,if it fires hard wire it to a switch on the dash.
When its been forced out of reverse it has probably damaged the inhibiter switch that stops it starting in gear and that could be anywhere, gearbox, linkage even ECU.
Could save you a lot of money and one in the eye for bloody renault.
That’s worth a shot, cheers!
As an addendum. If you look on most starter motors now you have what looks like a small secondary solenoid. It isnt. Its a thermal overload that controls how long you can crank the starter motor. It measures the current going to the cranking solenoid and works out the power consumed by the motor.
If this goes open circuit the starter is u/s
No just bypass it.You will get a “short circuit” flag on the dash but this means bugger all.Saves you 500 quid on the cost of a starter that has nothing wrong with it.

Works on an energy “ring”.The coil round the ignition barrel supplies a signal that needs the chip to supply a bit of lost code.Best way is to tape or glue the chip near the energy ring.If you drop the key it will still work because it will still unlock the steering lock but the chip will always be in place. And how many times do we drop the bloody keys?
Right pain in the ■■■ if you lose the chip.
