I am to be given a Renault Magnum 06 plate for the next week, I have no idea how you use the gears on it. It has a manual gearbox, but unlike other trucks there is no map on the gearstick.
Any ideas?

Normally 4 over4 with a splitter on every gear giving you 16 to choose from i had an 04 plate with a manual so i pressume the 06 will be the same take your time and you will soon get used to it quite a few vehicles have this type of box i find them better than an autobox but just my choice.

It’s like that in the premium and im pretty sure its the same in the magnum.

Yes you are right jonny i am at fault for not stating that but some people do pull them off he did say there was no guide so i awnsered accordingly.
No worries mate
Well could always try moving the gearstick around in the different gear slots and find what gear is what…wouldn’t of said it would damage the gearbox but i’m no mechanic, or a driver yet, Just giving advice to which i’d probably do myself if i was in that situation. Id of said you was lucky in getting the magnum though, don’t know many companies that have them, Space in them is deffinately alot!! Keep us posted like, and if you could get pictures up of it that would be cool, Don’t mind me i’m a truck nut, Can only look at trucks at the moment before i can get in one etc!!
As has been said, an 06 will still have the 16spd ZF box, in the Renault it is four with a split in low range, then into neutral and ‘slap it across’ to change into high range and follow the usual H pattern with splits. If you’ve not had a slap over box before, just move the stick from side to side in neutral, you’ll feel and hear it go up and down the ranges

My 04 plate never had a knock through box it was the same as in my 51 DAF 4 in low 4top after lifting button on the side plus a split button on the front of the gearstick to split all 8 gears both high and low.

I’m pretty sure it’ll be the 2 switch rather than the ‘slap across’ box too.
Oh so they fitted a switch at long last, the latest Magnum I had was a 53 plate, that was a slop over, like stirring a bucket of bolts with a mop handle
Thanks for the replies guys. The Magnum is only on hire for a few weeks, for the Christmas period, the truck itself is ok other than wobbling about in the cab and the getting in and out of the thing.
As for the gears it has got 4 over 4 slap box but i still cannot get it, We have a Volvo FH12 as well so i may ask for that instead.

The first Merc i drove had one of those boxes but it was arse about face.
Tried pulling away in 4th many a time in the Cortina after a week away
Managed 1st week in the magnum, finally got used to the gears! Anyway this one has 2 fuel tanks on both sides of the truck, both have removable filler caps. The fuel gauge showed empty today so filled up the one side and the gauge showed 1/2 full. So do i have to fill up both tanks to get full? Help appreciated.
I been driving a premium for a week now,
It has a slapover gearbox which took me a couple of days to get my head around!
I quite like it now but it does seem a lot of effort doing three movements instead of two,
I thought it was the quakers who did what we do plus a half not the French!

Don’t do what I did and step out of the cab thinking I was still driving a Volvo FL.

One tank will feed the other, hence the fuel guage situation. Normally says which one to fill, but look for the sender unit (all the pipes go onto it) on the top of the tank and thats the one that id have thought is the main tank as such…

Haha cortina, my dad rolled one of those before I was born, went to get the fish and chips and on way back hit a massive puddle and over she went, he was ok, fish and chips was all over the job though. Such a icon of britain is the cortina.
Don’t you worry about the gearbox in this cold weather there are greater concerns. If the vehicle is like my Magnum your major concern will be,in this frozen weather, your FEET.Renault in their wisdom moved everything over to the right for the UK market, everything that is except the air vent for your feet which remains in the French position on the left so wear extra socks.

I can second that, It was -7 this morning and my toes were freezing in the premium!
Im sure the night heater is the drivers side so I might defrost my toes with that tomorrow morning
