Remembrance day, who showed respect?

I was waiting for train at Eleven, French side and was listening to it on Radio 4 , made me think as I drove along past Adinkerke , I always look at the bunkers along there and wonder what horrors went on .

Deepinvet:
To all the people who moan about others who show no respect, that’s why we go to war so people can have the freedom of choice.

Well said…I spent the 2 mins in the truck at 11am also when parked up watching them do it on tv whilst watching the football, respect is what it’s all about…

had a late night last night but made sure i was up in time to watch it all on bbc 1.for all the bbc’s faults i thought their coverage was excellent.
always pay my respects whatever i’m doing,my great grandfather died at the somme, doesnt even have a grave as his body was never found.almost 60,000 allied casualties on the first day…

bald bloke:
We went to Thiepval where there is over 70,000 names of soldiers missing in action and its incredible seeing all those names.

70,000 MISSING :open_mouth:

Simon:
I just had two minutes of respect while at home.

Muckaway:
My 19month son was silent too, more than can be said of some peoples’ dogs…Chavs with bloody Staffis.

Don’t blame the dogs mate, they take their lead from their owners and don’t know any better
Staffies brought up properly are lovely dogs.

I know mate, one of the quarrymen where I work has one; Reggie, named after the Krays, has the typical studded collar, yetmy son cuddkes him when he sees him. Soft as a fresh turd and daft as a brush.

jammymutt:
I watched the ceremony from home I cant go to the local thing or any other as I am far too emotional and I just burst in to tears wherever I am, the one thing that made me mad today was that glasgow celtic have banned the sale of poppies at their ground and the team didnt wear poppies today I thought that was pretty shocking.

if this is true that is deeply shocking-wonder if celtic gave their players a choice of a shirt with and without a poppy embroidered on it?
as for that little ■■■■ who plays for sunderland who refused to wear a shirt with a poppy-did he think hitler would have left ireland alone if he had invaded mainland britain? what a ■■■■■■.

I don’t understand your argument mate.
How is he a ■■■■■■ because he chose not to wear a poppy?

Does the fact he doesn’t support the Royal British Legion mean he has no respect for the war dead?

.

he chose not to wear one because he is irish, but i think it shows a complete lack of respect to ask for a shirt without one.lots of irishmen died in both wars.
do you think its ok for glasgow celtic to ban the sales of poppies and not have them on their shirts if this is true?
surely some of the players might have wanted to wear one?

My father was in the Fleet air arm, one uncle was in subs, and a number of others were in the army during WW2. My Grandfather was at the Somme in WW1.
One of my hobbies is re-enacting WW2 navy, along with my son, son-in-law & Daughter, We strive to get it right.
We were invited to join in the British Legion parade near Warrington, then later to put a display inside the British Legion of some of the navy books, and equipment from WW2 that we’ve collected.
We felt, honoured, Privileged and humbled to be asked to join them in their services.

We will remember them.

What do people do with their old poppies? A few years back I went to my Great Uncles’ funeral, where it came out he’d been a tank driver, arriving in the desert post Tobruk and went on through Italy and was around Monte Cassino. After he was buried, I dropped my poppy into the grave. I’m thinking of putting this years’ one at the site of a plane crash near where my grandparents lived.

wheelyb:
Not a slating thread, just a question on how you showed respect today, if at all!

I mean, did you time taking a break over the 11:00 period to show silence for 2 mins out of the year?
Do you have a poppy on yer truck? pics?

I never did, not a concious descision. Just forgot about it. Don’t have a poppy anywhere, again not a concious descision not to, just not something i think i need to make a priority (rightly or wrongly) .

could it be that it is the BRITISH legion and he has a problem with that? although it cant be that as he plays football in britain,so why would he not want to show support?

I support all our armed service personnel 365/24/7 so do not need to make a special effort to do so on one day of the year

As for supporting any Govt that sent them into certain places … not a ZB chance

Remembrance Day is a national holiday in Canada but I had to work , stopped for some reflection at 11 o’clock .
As part of the Citizenship requirements here you are informed that it is your duty that whenever you see a serviceman or woman in uniform you should shake their hand and say thank-you ,a small token of gratitude that goes a long way.

I was referee in an under 13’s rugby match with an 11am kick off, I liked up both sides on the half way line for a minutes silence, every player stayed head down & silent for the 60 seconds.

Good lads.

Ross.

Well I’ll have to disagree with you there. It’s his choice and I don’t for one minute think he did it to disrespect the war dead. I think he did it because he doesn’t support the Royal British Legion. Which is fair enough.

For want of a better analagy, it’s no different than me turning to you and saying ‘If you wear this Child Line bracelet it’s a sign of support for the charity, but if you don’t wear it you’re condoning child abuse’.

I did being ex squaddie and doing the realities of war tour around Belgium was unbelievable , we took part in the parade they do at Ypres , I’m sure they do it everyday or every week, some of the places we went to was crazy the amount of graves you see, didn’t realise at the time it’s afterwards when your laying in bed at night then thinking about the day quite astonishing really ! We will remember them

For me over the last few years, I have had a big interest in Bomber Command. Bomber Commands 55,573 lost men finally got their moment earlier this year with the opening of the memorial.

My own personal repsect goes out to those guys, and my thoughts were with them at 11am.

Ken.

then i would wear the childline bracelet ,no problem. :sunglasses:
i see what you are saying, but i think he’s not supporting it simply because he is irish, which is politicising it all.were there any english players who didnt wear the poppy because they dont support the royal british legion?
