Recycling was skip hire.
Metal salvage was scrap metal merchants . . yes i know,i should get out more :stuck_out_tongue:

And there were digs and no sleeper cabs and everyone was friendly and had the “craic” and oh! there was no curtainsiders and every load was sheeted and roped, usually with pride in the finnished job.Decent cafes on all the A roads,no E.coli vans and robber M/way services.Happy days! Bewick.

And when you were as an inexperienced youngster deeply in the s…, someone would help you out, be it a puncture, breakdown, folding a sheet, (or getting it on), or even just how to get there, or the best time to load/tip, or even how to get into a works . It really was better, we aint sad, no, we were lucky to have experienced “better” times. Cheerio for now, (I shall seek solace in the Bollinger).

That is why the industry and everything else is in a bloody mess accountants run things nowadays plus it might not be polictally correct to say sand and gravel etc. It is supposed to be progress or that is what they say ?, bed time finished another bottle of Vino

Putting it like that ,perhaps"it was better".no mobile . . ring the clearing agent.
My first sleeper cab was a Merc day cab with a bit of foam and the back of the passenger seat removed.

Can you still load carbon black?

I am sure it must have a new name now

carbon black is still carbon black no rubber without it

You ran back to the yard on Saturday morning to pick up your wage packet or you went in for four hours overtime to wash a few lorries.

No agencies, no lay by parking, and no H&S just common sense & discretion.

OMG! Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.

Greasy spoons, the most appalling overnight accomodation with up to ten others in the same room snoring and ■■■■■■■ their way through the night, horribly congested roads especially before the M25 was finished, the joys of roping and sheeting in the pouring rain and a whole range of illnesses which then carried you off early!

Please! There’s an infuriating but true song in Disneyland on one of the rides which shows the progress in living conditions through the last century.

Now is the time, now is the best time, now is the best time in your life!

When on multi drop. first stop was always breakfast, then no stopping till all was done except for the obligatory cups of tea. Then all meet up in the afternoon to spend time supping even more tea and playing the pinball machines. Great in winter, back to lorry and it was all frozen up again. Still it gave you time to make your log sheet out while your mate was scraping the ice off the windscreen   .
Getting back to the yard and the TM saying “you’re late arnt you” “Yes boss the weather’s atrocious” :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:
