Harry Monk:
Flat trailers are a bit like gas street lighting or black and white televisions, something which worked back in the day but is hopelessly outdated now. There’s a reason virtually no-one runs one any more.
You best call that other haulier from kent that runs a large fleet of green dafs pulling flats that they are making a mistake.

Carryfast, I had just the thing for you once a Fruehauf Psk with a tiltech body, I had it engineered so the rear doors could be lifted off & their frame with a forktruck, 8 bolts to undo & hey presto a flat/psk, theres pictures of it on here somewhere with Intersped written on it…
With the advantage of being able to buy it for a give away price because no one else, including nmm, would have wanted it because they’d have preferred to buy a curtain sider and a flat .Although I’d have preferred one without the heavy rear doors to shift.

The only people who don’t want tilts any more are customers

Also looks better for the authentic TIR look. I can just picture the Bedford with TIR plates an roof rack and a bucket hanging off the towing pin.
Look blinding on the night trunk up the M1

And there you have it, the voice of reason.
That customer is the king. without him we die…
Blimey we may just have stumbled on the answer to the scourge and menace of cheap east european competition. All east european registered wagons using tilts will be turned away only uk registered ones using flats allowed with the quality of roping and sheeting to be checked before the driver will be allowed to leave the customer’s yard. This might even result in the return of Bewick to the scene.

More like no runs beyond 150 miles of base because of the cost of the diesel. So running that portakabin to Bristol would have been ok but as for Truro forget it.

Much of Swain’s work was steel from Thamesteel at Sheerness, a flat trailer is ideal for rebar etc, but that’s closed now and come to think of it you don’t see their trucks about in anywhere near the same numbers as you once did.
kr79:
I used to see plenty until I left in October and I’d guess they are one of the biggest indipendant hauliers left in the south east.
They still use a load of the Kev , they are making money with em so keep using them , seem to get plenty of jobs out of Kent area.
Although I guess its their long term reputation that gets them the work plus the flexibility of the fleet.
Looking at their website, they do a lot of the work which is ideally suited to flat trailers, steel mesh, concrete tunnel sections etc, they do a lot of work based on manufacturing in the Medway area for the construction industry which in turn is based on proximity to the River Thames and the Kent cement industry.
That having been said, that sector is in downturn at the moment and they are increasingly moving into distribution, and operate many Tautliners nowadays.
A firm as big as that has to offer a complete service to meet different transport needs and warehousing etc to survive at that size. But up until I left I’d say the vast majority of there trucks I saw we’re flats. As you say it serves there core customers well as that’s whet there home turf needs to transport it’s goods. As Easter star says it is probably good paying as it will be more service based than other work and there’s not as much competition as a lot of the big big players couldn’t offer that more bespoke service that that work requires.
