Regional Accents

Maybe a bit off topic, but relevant as we all spend time in different areas of the country - what’s your favourite and least favourite accent?

Dunno why but I think Stoke/Potteries accent is brilliant, whereas after 12 years of it from the missus, Geordie is losing it’s appeal (don’t tell her mind!) :sunglasses:

thar in’t no doubt about it - you can’t beat a rum ol’ Suffolk accent bor’!

In line with the Geordie accent,of which I have one despite now living in Yorkshire, there are 5 regional dialects in the North East.

So I’m kinda biased.

Ken.

The funniest episode involving accents was at Asda Chepstow .
I was in the waiting room having a brew waiting for my paperwork .The bloke behind the counter had quite a strong welsh accent, in walked a scouser that had the broadest accent i have ever heard , you hardly understand either of them .The funny bit was the scouser getting annoyed with the bloke behind the counter and saying " speak ■■■■■■■ english will yer " Like the scouser had perfect english off course
I nearly spat all my coffee out

 Ive never heard a welsh accent at chepstow…
Its all so watered down being so close to the neighbours from hell :stuck_out_tongue: :smiling_imp:

I havent got much of a welsh accent either but thats besides the point

Truckers only speak one accent. Grumpy.

The female Geordie accent works for me, mainly as I have very special memories associated with it

posh gits with every other word having a extra R in it.and scousers, best one when in a group is good ol black country.you may as well be tuning som’at on long wave,it aint english, can be translated using the Black Country Bugle.

My favourite has got to be Brummie.
Like - Two Birmingham elephants in a graveyard.
One says " 'did yer ■■■ 'ere to die"?.
Other one says " no,I ■■■ ere yisterdie".

Right,I’ll gerroff.

When I was 18 there was a woman I used to speak to often (work) on the phone. She had a soft s l o w Scottish accent, much less harsh than the majority of accents from that neck of the woods. Speaking with her on the phone conjured up an image of the sweetest, sexiest little cutie you could imagine!

Eventually I got to meet her in the flesh, so to speak; she must’ve been 20+ stone and rough as chuff!! :open_mouth:   . I was devastated, in fact I was bordering on traumatised!!! I’ve never felt comfy with that accent since.

Overall though, best accent is a non-too-harsh Geordie and worst, by far, is the Bristol ‘language’!!

most fun I had was trying to understand a night lairage man in an abattoir somewhere in the frozen north
( it was somewhere near Wolverhampton  )

he couldn’t understand my slight Westcountry accent either

the frozen north. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

That’s strange Denis because round our way, we reckon that anyone from south of Sheffield is southern!!! You can hear the ‘French’ in their accent!!

And what’s all this ‘West Country’■■? Do you mean ‘right down south’■■

the worst accent has to be scouse, you need a towel to remove
the spit after any conversation.

tin hat and face mask on and running

people live north of sheffield

I think my favourite accent is South West, around Bridgewater and Glastonbury :stuck_out_tongue: closely followed by Mary went to Work in Whitehaven area.

I hate the Cockernese which includes Essex (Whining) and Kent (Wingeing) :stuck_out_tongue:

Born in Chessington (not the zoo), lived in Devon, Taunton, Winchester and now Leicester. Spent 10 years delivering in the Northern counties of England and a few trips to Wales & Scotland. Last 10 years went mainly to London & home counties.
I enjoy regional accents although some take a moment to relate to.
I do not hate any of them and am wondering wether it is the accent that a lot of people do not like or is it the regional outlook on life in general. The pace down south sems to be a lot quicker than up north and GENERALLY, I find northerners more likely to give you the time of day.

Does anyone get offended when someone tries to copy their accent?

Is it more to do with our approach to someone when we have preconceptions of what they might be like because of the area they live in?
