References

Hi I start my new job tomorrow and I received a letter confirming everything. At the end of the letter it said job offer subject to satisfactory references from last 2 employers. I did well with both but left one as I said something that offended a female staff member and the other I left as not happy with their conduct. Both I just quit and never worked my notice. What do you think would happen if I can’t get a good reference but do perform well with the new employer

doubt it will matter if you have started already.

maybe a learning point though, I have always worked my notice as you never know when something like this will bite you back.

most bigger places only confirm dates now in any case.

Just worried as it’s one of the big employers in the industry and want to make a go of it

they cant by law give you a bad reference … all they can and are expected to say are time keeping, appearance etc. I’ve never known a company to actually ask for references.

When asked why left I’ve always put personal reasons and where references are asked I tell the truth that the company and I left on a difference of opinion, also the reference would not possibly a true statement … always offer another reference if you can

working in recruitment the amount I see would suggest otherwise (not that its not illegal but they do send bad ones through), comments such as left due to having no ability not to hit anything is one that springs to mind.
and a new employer isn’t going to say it was bad they.

Thanks guys. I am good time keeper very honest and don’t have bumps. My last employer was asking me to cut and tie up airlines to my trailer as airbags had blown and wanted me to drive it back. I refused and resigned instantly

don’t worry even the guy who I got that reference for is now at a new company and was taken on full time, most people should be able to tell a bitter and twisted reply to a genuine one.

He starts tomorrow.

Wasn’t there a post on here a while ago about someone starting a new job and then being ‘let go’ a couple of weeks down the line because his references weren’t up to scratch?

Burning bridges is something I try not to do.

Nevertheless, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

I’m interested to know what you said to your female colleague? I’m guessing you walked off before you were escorted off?

personally think references other than as a way of tracking dates are pointless.

most people who don’t get on with person a, will give person b as a reference.

I was a bus driver and another driver was on about not liking to ■■■■■■■■■■ on his own (don’t ask) I looked over to her and said take her with you. This woman always joked about with drivers in a simular mannor so I thought she’d take it as the joke it was. She never

if you work in recruitment, should you not be capable of basic grammar and punctuation?

They can’t give you a bad reference in writing but they can do it over the phone or they can refuse altogether which amounts to the same thing.

This could be worrying if the bus company feels inclined to mention it, although they may not hold a grudge and not want the issue raising its head again (pardon the pun).

Still amusing though, sorry she didn’t recognise the compliment.
Women are a strange breed and always best to let them start the banter. For example an ex partner of mine liked ■■■■ but if I went straight for the wrong un without being invited first there would be trouble.

Lol I’m the only woman driver surrounded by men, I’ve heard worse and usually give as good as I get. If the guys get carried away I tell them that’s enough but I would never make a fuss about it. Everyone has their own limits but it’s the environment I work in and I know they’re just having a laugh with no offence intended. I can’t have it all ways, it’s unfair to joke with them in such a way then complain when they get carried away.

What was worse was she is the same with other drivers must have not liked me. She was a cook in canteen

What’s wrong with being asked to cable tie airlines to get home for a proper fix ? Was it worth walking out?

What you have yo ask yourself is would I have been fined by vosa if they stopped me. If the answer is yes then I shouldn’t have to do it
