Redundancy - any good advice

Hey all,

Rolled back into the yard yesterday afternoon and watched one of our local competitors loading up our gear and starting to take it away to a safe house.

Then 30 minutes past I missed a call (phone in cab as I was unloading) and starting seeing everyone on phone either really sad sitting on ground in daze or shouting down phone etc.

Lady left answerphone to call her back and did so in cab to be told its all over as of 1608.

Wondered if any on here been through it and had decent advice as some of my friends are struggling with the enormity of what’s happened.

I’ve kinda got my zb together at moment so Ive got some decisions and choices to make.
But some others I was with truly look or sound screwed…just like to try and help them as they were good lads and have asked me to help where I can.

Trouble is never been in this position, so don’t know what to advise. Little shell shocked but doing DIY in bedroom so still flavour of the day at home…for the minute

Thanks in advance.

See if there are any jobs going at the competitors yard would be my first action. The work that your boss had will presumably still need doing so try to find out whose doing it now.Citizens advice might be able to help with advice about your redundancy package.

Citizens advice would be my first call. If you are in a union they can help with following the process but while you will get some good advice here there will also be some that is suspect. If you can,t tell the difference then…

I assume due to lack of notice given they have probably gone under owing a lot of money,if that’s the case you’ll be looking at statutory redundancy search google for info.

Thanks Gents.

Yeah recievers are all in hand doing our statutory redundancy most of us been there under 2 years so we only get wages owed up until Sun.
Which ain’t to be sniffed at. As we’re two weeks in arrears weekly paid.
Not sure how we prove what we are owed but supposedly all online and self explantory. So I’ll do that when it gets here.

Then we compete against all other creditors including HMRC for last 3 days work we’ve done as its not protected so might not get all money owed.

There is no statutory redundancy for 9 of us at least maybe more as our work is not solely haulage.

No union only a small family outfit.

No competitors all our gear being returned to suppliers for resale I imagine hence repossession. They’ll then go to competitors only a few at moment around UK no where near here.

Selfishly I’ve had a similar company call me separately asking me if I consider going back but was unaware this had happened. So I’ve got a few options but its not a done deal as I’m not sure about returning to a previous job.
So we’re gonna have a meeting to discuss items as in cold light of day they might not want me back.

Citizens advice great advice I’ll make sure others know and do stuff as a few self employed and they’re truly zb’d at moment

at the end of the day, there seems to be a lot of job vacancies about… you just need to sort the good ones from the crap…
sit down and prepare a rough CV of your experience, qualifications , etc, be prepared to be flexible for any opportunities offered…
when you get an interview don’t slag off previous employers…
and good luck…

The good news is Redundancy through no fault of your own unlocks immediate benefits entitlement so get onto that ASAP.
I would take a week off and then start having a gander at what’s about, depending where you are, there’s plenty of agency work about right now.
Priority number one is get your CV up to date, I know it’s a pain but there’s plenty of help available especially at the Job Centre

ive just landed job on milk not far from you  i can ask when i start if anymore going not brilliant money but better than dole ,also marriages had a class 2 job going today with bounce up to 1 when needed money was quite good but bit of graft involved , i only turned it down because 3 am starts :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :imp: :imp:

Sorry to hear of you and your colleagues plight :frowning:
We got a couple of vacancies if that’s any help , we even have an a pretty ancient low loader for you to play with  (oh and a lend if needed of a 1977 vintage one if you really want to go retro  )
Seriously tho hope you get sorted out soon .
Cheers Mike

Don’t want to sound like some sort of motivational speaker but there is plenty of work out there, as some have said you need to sort out the good from the bad but to tide you over agency would not be the worse choice.
You’ll look back on it and think probably one of the best things that could have happened.

Sorry to hear about this Constantine, but knowing you, you’ll soon sort something out.

The only bit of advice I can offer for the future is to try & put some ‘Rainy Day Money’ aside, when they get another job, save a little each week, £20 a week will add up to a Grand at the end of a year & so on + a bit of interest if it’s in the right account & never touch it (except when it’s Raining, like now) do it every week & you won’t even miss it after a while.

Good luck with the new job hunting.

Cheers Martin,

Ive been good I’m covered for two months on bills and food. I was a good boy as this was a very lucrative job and could afford to do it at the time.

The rest were not as lucky or could afford it such as children, sole earners and needed money to survive etc :frowning:

Been close to this predicament in construction before but we never spectularly blew up like this before.

Thanks Amamdada,

Unfortunately this was my best ever job in haulage and even in last decade with some awesome terms and conditions and decent relationship with everyone there and boss. Genuinely enjoyed getting up.and going to work no matter what time day or night even the occasional weekend cover never got me down there.

So genuinely gutted tonight I’ve lost it through no fault of my own.

So not sure I’ll look back at it and think best thing that happened being made redundant…think its gonna be one of the reminisces sounding like an old boy saying best job I ever had and you don’t know how good you had it etc etc…

Chelmsford essex.chronicle today. Rhinoplanthire need driver experience advantage good rates and plenty OT. 01277373626 email is stevenbrown@rhinosplanthire.co.uk. !!!

My advice would be get on the blower quick as possible and get something lined up, easier said than done maybe but, don’t use it as an opportunity to take a mini break or splurge with any unexpected moolah that comes your way.

You should get all wages owed anything outstanding the government, after what the recievers pay, should cough, as far as I was aware.

Constantine.
Get the bedroom sorted, have a beer, then get networking.
I’m guessing you reside in a CO postcode so you can head North or South.
You may not find anything matching the T’s and C’s that you had, but there is a shed load of work around.
You must have bumped into plenty of folk doing what you did, so get phoning or driving and chatting.
All the best!

I’ve been made redundant 3 times i think over the years, each time especially the last it seemed a disaster and i thought the last job i would never better, well i have bettered it and bettered it again and again since.

The thing about lorryists is that the older and more experienced we get, the more desirable (in the workplace silly… :unamused: ) we get, somewhere there is a job where experience, can do and the right attitude counts…it might not feel like it at the moment but there will be better days.

If you’re in Essex and don’t mind working on the milk then Gregory’s are looking for artic tanker drivers at Hatfield Peverel.

Cheers Mikey D,

Returned favour to a wide load with prefab on Tuesday era who go lost at Rowhedge near that old quarry near my old yard.

They got lost big time 4 m and 2m overhang at rear. So escorted him and ■■■■■■ (next to useless for him and back through Colchester and around road closure that got them lost) into Monkwick.

NIghtmare for the old boy driving said he’d never sweated so much…He done good reversing into a junction with parked cars either side about 6" spare either side with no help just jumping in and out continuously.

Wish i was closer to Shropshire! Retro sounds awesome.

Got a local plant hire company call up yesterday saying would I cover low loader for 5 weeks holiday on perm then change over to rigid unless other guy wants to go back on rigid.

Flexible either way don’t really care what I drive it ain’t mine

Hopefully start 7th in mean time gotta decide carry on DIY or agency if any of them will take me on for a week…as I’ll have to go on emergency tax etc.
