Redundancy advice and jobs

Hello all well after redundancys have hit our place, I have decided to take voluntary redundancy in the persuit of a class one job, I currently have a steady decently paid class two job but im dieing to move up, and was looking to leave anyway been close to getting a job let down by lack of experiance.

The way I see it is if im going to leave sooner or later I might aswell get paid for it, I’m pretty certain if i didn’t volunteer I would be safe by the matrix scoring system they give us, but it saves one of my mates also who proberly doesn’t have the same chance as me to get another job as easy.

I will get a decent pay out i have only recently passed my class one for effectively 2 and a bit months and I dont want to lose what i learned, I have effectively worked a deal with the tm so i don’t have to work last 4 weeks of the redundancy period, but will pay me on top of statutory payment.

Am i doing the right thing ?

im going to hit the doors and emails and numbers of most companys in around me and some not so, so if there is anyone who knows of any class one jobs going in and around the west midlands i would greatly appreciate it if you could PM me some details.

Thanks Simon.

If you’ve got a lucrative redundancy offer grab it with both hands, there will be two possible scenarios.

One, there may well be further compulsory redundancies with only the basic entitlements which won’t buy you a cup of tea.

Two, the company finds that they’ve made too many redundant cos they haven’t a clue how to run the company properly since they kicked all the old school management out that made it big in the first place…some car transporter drivers here know exactly what and which company i’m talking about…and you might find them ringing you up in a few months offering you a job.

Either way you’re better off with that money than without it.

If nothing comes up permanent get yerself signed on the agencies and get some experience under the belt.

Best of luck with the search.

By the way, knock on doors politely and dressed smart working, and carry a full concise CV with you.

The face to face approach still works.

the problem is if you leave will you get a class 1 job before your money runs out, maybe not as theres not many jobs out there atm and reading alot of posts on here theres not much agency work going

There looking for drivers to start in February and they are good as with regards to newly qualified drivers. New Carlsberg contract.

Just be aware that although redundancy payments are tax free - money in lieu of notice is not.

Give this lot in power half a chance and there will be no tax free money - ever, on anything, except maybe parties where you dress up as Georing or Himmler and claim it on Mp’s expenses

Yea i found that out today but i think i got quite a good deal out of it.

and cheers @lovelyperson too.

If you’re taking redundancy before march 31st of any year, then NOT working for the remainder of the tax year entitles you to some level of tax rebate, depending upon how much earnings you’ve forgone by not working.

I took redundancy December 2010, got a small lieu payment of about 2 weeks worth, then sat out until April (13 weeks). The taxman coughed up £2500 for my trouble. If I’d worked, I’d not been paid that, and would have been fully taxed on any earnings, because of my redundancy payment. I reckon therefore that was a good way to play it for my circumstances. Sure you can’t sign on etc, but it set me up for April onwards when I started doing agency work. This month, a notorious bad month for agency work, I’m setting up a £1k rebate for THIS ending tax year (by sitting out 4 weeks between now and the end of March) Use the system to your best advantage, look at your home circumstances, then get the most out of the system. This only works with PAYE as far as I can tell.

This only works with PAYE as far as I can tell.

Correct.

I am PAYE but that is cracking bit of advice but i need the class one experiance and hopefully have a job tomorrow

company told me they want to keep me to the 20th which is reasonable , I asked to go earlyier.

Will pay me 3 weeks statutory (been there 4 but 2 years were under age of 22) so half a week max is £400 for each week aparrently so thts 1200 not tax or insurance deductable, and they are also paying me 4 weeks in lieu as well as holday owed by end of month so it’s not that bad a deal if i can walk into another job hopefully

Any payment that is not labelled “redundancy payment” will be taxed as per normal. The tax rebate you’d get on PAYE is for the tax you already paid earlier in the tax year that was based upon you working right up until march 31st. If your payment goes well into the taxable zone, then this can be quite a bit, and worth the sitting out as it was in my case. Keeping your hand in is commendable and all, but it’s not worth losing easy money for if push comes to shove.

I’ve been offered some Ltd/SE work but I’m turning it down because its a lot of extra hassle for less money, since I’d have to account for every penny to get any kind of tax offset against it. This has ruled me out of Morrisons for the time being, but they’ve just reported having a crap christmas anyway, so I guess the hours won’t be there in the near future anyways!

As for “umbrella companies” - don’t even go there! I can’t see how anyone can make this pay, what with the deduction that these pen pushers charge for doing the paperwork that you could get done for free with a PAYE firm instead! Don’t forget you don’t get paid holidays, have to provide ALL receipts instead of just a sample some, and all this for an extra quid an hour on the hourly rate? (around here at least). Not worth it in my book, but if you’ve got 30+ hours a week set up, it might pay. Beats me why they don’t offer a full time job if they’ve got that many hours going though!?

Thanks everyone I just got my first class one job starting the following week after i finish so im quids in couldn’t have worked out better but all your advice was much appreciated !

Tbh i just want the experiance and move up from there as im 24 this month he is phoning insurance up and he dont think it is a problem had younger than me before and I got to phone him monday even sorted a start date so im 99% sure its all good the only isssue is i get £2 ph more if i am self employedis it worth it lads? what pros and cons?

Happy Friday everyone

Still trying to crack into the driving world and have decided to approach Norbert Dentressangle but have came across two addresses. One in Livingston (Carnegie Road Deans Industrial Estate), had a drive out to hand in my CV and couldn’t find them, but got told they had moved to Edinburgh (Turnhouse Road), could anyone confirm the address as would like to hand deliver my CV or if anyone knows of the local email address for them I could email my CV and Covering Letter.

Many thanks
