Red Arrows

Another pilot killed but this time on the ground :open_mouth:

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-15640104

I’ve been following this story since I found out about it around 2pm. The silence from the media was the same as when FLT Jon Egging was killed. Two of the famous REDS killed in 3months as shock me, I just can’t believe it. My thought & prayers go out to the pilots family. Also to the remaining REDS who have had a bad year. The Pilots name will not be released until a period of grace as been taken by His OR Her family. RIP Red ?. :open_mouth:

It seems more like a mechanical error rather than a flying accident, apparently the seats are designed to work on the ground but normally with a parachute and the canopy open.

Update:

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-15655865

When I was at Yeovilton air show in 1974 I think it was , the same thing happened with a visiting RAF Harrier ,seat went off as he was getting out of the cockpit ,I saw the seat go up and the chute open but word was he was just getting out I never heard how he got on but it was a sad day, one minute free as bird in the air the next an ambulance.

Red Arrows aircraft crashes at Bournemouth Air Festival | Daily Mail Online

I saw this on Sky News earlier, not good. Hope the pilot is okay.

Unfortunately he never made it, they were flying over my house last Sunday at the Bristol balloon festival and they were fantastic, R I P .

Just been confirmed that the pilot died, named as 33 year old Jon Egging in Red Four.

Flt Lt Jon Egging, 33 RIP Red 4

Very sad news. I have a close relationship with the Red Arrows.

My late brother organised a sponsored vehicle for them for several years which they used to tow the display / commentary unit around airshows. Pete was lucky enough to fly with them in training. Only yesterday I was looking at a photo, with the pilots, my brother and his sales team.

This is very sad news because these pilots are the best of the rest.

In my newspaper it says that the last Red Arrows pilot to lose his life was 33 years ago :frowning:

I dont normally feel any emotion when a stranger dies and i get a bit wound up when people start spilling there guts on internet forums with RIP brother/son or whatever…

But this story has really bothered me

. I suppose as i grew up I thought nothing could go wrong with these Men …

So …#

RIP mate

i feel sorry for the other 8 pilots who had to crash their planes to maintain formation

the plane crashed about 1/2 mile or so from my house

the pilot was a hero as he stayed with his plane to stop it from hitting houses and people walking by the river

Totaly uncalled for remark!!!.

It’s not the first incident involving the Reds this year.

In pre season training over, I think it was Malta or Cyprus, 2 of the Hawk T1’s collided but thankfully the male and female pilots both landed ok. This is on top of the mid air collision in 2010 that they also suffered in training.

You can bet the bean counters in Whitehall will be having a field day now, hoping they can scrap what is undoubtedly the finest display team in the world.

The aviation forums that I frequent are full of the story.

My condolences go to his widow Dr. Emma Egging who was at the air show. :frowning:

Ken.

This is a brilliant obituary that Jon Egging almost wrote himself.
He used to live near Southam Warks and his father is a BA pilot from Stratford on Avon.

A fine young man loses his life whilst doing something he loved. I can only hope that will ease the pain a little for his family.

I saw the Red Arrows a few years ago at Fairford. I was a bit of a doubting Thomas, I honestly didn’t expect they could live up to their reputation. They did.

Just heard 12 people been killed in a plane crash in Canada.

Just read that the rest of the Red Arrows are cleared to fly again. Also its reported that the Red’s might not display again this year.

The MOD also say that the aircraft that Flt Lt Jon Egging was flying wasn’t his regular aircraft BUT the one that Kirsty Moore normaly flies this happens through out the display season so they say.
