Red air line failure - at speed

OK, so a truck and trailer (atric) are going down the motorway at 56 mph when all of a sudden the red air line fails. What would you expect to happen?

(The truck is a couple of years old and I’m not sure whether the trailer has ABS or EBS)

Why would the red line fail ■■?

I’m not sure although suspect possible damage prior which weakened it.

the new fh has this problem caused by leaving the rear catwalk light on…

If total instant failure I would expect the trailer brakes to come on and plumes of smoke to start appearing off the tyres accompanied by warning lights galore, serious ring piece activity (1p to dustbin lid proportions) and excessive tea spillage.

All units potentially have this problem if the cat-walk light is left on, and the lines are hanging too close.

should have been spotted on pre use checks though

incorrect … Scania’s rear work light goes out automatically when the vehicle moves after a distance

Ok when starting had to do a big jacknife type reverse then happens?

Thats all I would have expected to happen but the other day, there was a haulier down in the west country who had a red air line fail whilst he was going 56 mph on the motorway and the end result was a £20k repair bill because the vehicle jacknifed.

I was under the impression that if this happened and the trailer had EBS fitted to it, then the system would not immediately go into emergency mode and apply the brakes until the vehicle got to beneath a certain speed.

Happened to me just coming south on the A74 just before beatock ministry check there used to be a bump in the road. Airline shot off and guess what was behind me.Jumped out put it back on gave plod a wave and shot off quick no harm done.

happened to me a lot of years ago, fully freighted, no ABS… middle lane M6 sb towards Tebay… stopped in a straight line but needed six new super singles afterwards… my undercrackers were ok after a couple of washes…

Are you saying you stretch the suzies out and examine them fully before use?

Was thinking the same,

Its happened to me at 30mph, hit a pot hole and the red line fired out. I can only assume i hadn’t turned the collar and the jolt was enough to do that, i was around 70 miles into my shift. The whole lot comes to a complete stop, you leave black lines on the tarmac and you get a sore neck. If another lorry is tailgating you then you probably kill him aswell.

The amount of trucks I get in to move or shunt or drive or whatever where the previous driver has hardly turned the collar round is a joke. Lazy knobs.

But anyway I think he was talking out of it arse, how can it jack knife when the braking was done all from the trailer wheels which is trying to pull the unit back, a jack knife is where the trailer pushes the unit round.

Exactly…

But I’ve seen the repair invoice so it did happen. What’s more, the n/s of the cab had gone through into the trailer.

You’re assuming the driver didn’t jam on the brakes when it happened, which on a wet road would cause such a pickle. We know you’re the worlds greatest driver and would have brought it to a controlled stop in a second with no damage whatsoever but some of us might panic

When the red airline goes the brakes come on in the unit and trailer. I’ll guess the units air tank empties out quicker than the trailers ? Either way the unit will lock up quicker than a loaded trailer which would have more weight to push it.
