Depends what you want to do, if your just wanting to do breakdowns foe AA etc, you need fairly good mechanical and diagnostic skills to get punters on their way, trucks are only tacho exempt if working within a given radius of base (cant remember what it is now). If you do relay type work you need to use tachos. I did heavy recovery a few years ago (early 2000s), on call 27/7, so you dont know when the phones going to go, and if on the Police schemes, you will come across some horrendous accidents and sad to say bodies, so a strong stomach and slight sense of black humour is a requisite.

Are you single? Crack on

If not, it’s deffo not for you.

Most places just want a driver and a licence, they will train you the way they want.

aa are recruiting now for summer hols recovery men, six months work, no spanners just get them on and away but not too far as no nights out. first two weeks training the aa way, then out with permenant driver for a couple of days. basic not brill but add ons soon make it up,rolling 4 on 4 off and rolling days nights, and they like you to work some overtime, must be able to work with grumpy people but most are just happy you have arrived.

Steve if you looking to contract out to the AA or Rac u will need a large fleet as they wont sub out to contractors with 1 or 2 trucks.
Reason been that if and when it gets busy they want to just make one phone call in a prticular area to cover the excess work and wont be calling around diff contractors to see can they do it.
Any contractors for them have to adhere to serious h&s finance fleet etc etc conditions.
Been in contact with them in the past regarding this and its near impossible to get in

if you want to be a contractor for clubs you will need to be pas43 accredited for a start .And at the moment green flag as just renewed there contract and ditched alot of operators. there is alot of recovery operators struggling at the moment

There’s another post on here I’ve just put a load of info (rambling) on, so won’t write it again.
As said, the clubs won’t touch you without PAS43 accreditation.
The recovery industry is in a bad way, with a lot of opps struggling. This will only get worse as the GF/RBS business strategy takes hold, driving a lot of opps out of business and forcing the other clubs to cut their rates to compete.
