Motorway jobs will probably scare the living daylights out of you!!! So always keep one eye on your job and another on the motorway to see what lunatic driver is trying to kill you!
Its ok work really but a lot of hours involved, I did in excess of 24 hours at a time.crap money so you will need they hours and remember the call outs on top.be prepared for 7 days a week as you aren’t tachoed in effect
So apart from that could be good experience? Im hoping going to have a chat with a company tuesday 10 hours a day £8/£16 ph dependingon shift and how many jobs i do.
In my experience what ever the shift was add 3 hours. Its just the way the job goes

That’s excellent money for any job in haulage, so take it and give it a go.
I did recovery when I first started and loved it, downsides were the boss was an arse, you always got a crappy job at the end of your shift, dropping a prop or half shaft on a(nother) tipper that’s burnt it’s clutch out at landfill, scummy family’s who’s cars break down - you can spend longer cleaning the inside of the truck than you did recovering their car, expected to know far too much about cars - recovery operator NOT mechanic, being one of the first on scene at some really nasty accidents can effect your appetite, can be a dirty job with long hours and you have to buy your own tools - will be expected to do minor repairs rather than just tow.
Good sides, most jobs are different, meet some really nice people, go some really nice places you wouldn’t normally take a truck - cars aren’t picky where they break down, sometimes get tips or better still girls phone numbers - not bad if you’re single but I wasn’t .
Money will most likely be monthly pay, not many pay weekly.
You run a book of lies (log book), but should be on tacho if any job takes you over 60 mile radius from the depot - which is actually pretty damned far and hardly happens
Good luck and enjoy it, definately 1 of the better and more varied jobs in haulage
As above.
Our lads get paid anywhere between £9 and £12 an hour, time an a half after 40 hours.
Average 60 hours a week.
I make around £30 a week with tips, (see how many tips you get doing RDC work).
But above all, no two days are the same, you never know where you’ll be or who you’ll meet.
Not a job you get bored of.

That’s a really well paid place Cieren, most recovery is a set £ / hr for all hours including weekends, some pay a little extra for nights.
On a Sunday, we had 2 choices, be on call from home and only get paid hours that we worked, ie when called out to a job and for collecting and dropping truck back off, or we could be in the yard and get paid all hours. My car was serviced every month (1 sunday per month) as we had all the equipment (4 poster lifter, oil drain etc) and I had the time and got paid for doing it, if a job came in part way through it just waited on the lift for me to get back. Probably had the best maintained Saab on the planet
I very nearly went for another recovery job a few weeks back, but never did, not sure why - maybe I’ve got soft and used to the warm / dry cab??

Holy Shamolley!! Good wages…I wouldn’t mind some of that [zb]er myself…!!
Having said that, after a few incidents with suicidal customers on the hard shoulder, drunks broken down on a night on the town and stomach churning experiences when you arrive at an accident etc. I often wondered if recovery was really worth it…
I think its a great way to gain experience, ul certainly take the truck to some strange places and meet some really random ppl… i think working for a decent firm the wages are good and you can put the hours in sumtimes though not through choice, but you just gotta do what it takes to get the job done… its not un common to take home 800 a week at busy periods, and on a mental week, n i mean 7 days not un common to take home a grand… but… and i think its a big but… its no normal drivin job, i do heavys and lights and even when ur not on shift expect a phone call at anytime, the nights on call can be rubbish if you still gotta do your shift the next day, not much family time because your hours are so messed up, infact i think i was at home more when i spent 4days/ nights trucking… and not much social life cause of your weekends working, and all that work can lead to health problems. defo not a job for your average driver, n be prepared for a challange everyday… so take ya time, esp as a newbie, but all said and done gr8 exp and can be very rewarding, and the money can prove very useful, well worth giving a try.
good luck pal, and most of all enjoy, and learn all ya can from it.
I would go back to it again. Yes the hours are long an never ending!!
I use to work 4 on 4 off, but would end up working 2/4 days of my days off. You will find yourself doing 19-20 hours then coming back in after 3-4 hours off. Get use to sleeping a lot on police jobs, as your called out straight way (well we were) and can be sitting there for hours before you can get started.
