Recording Daily Checks on Tachograph

Is there a minimum time that has to be recorded as ‘Other Work’ on the Tachograph to show a walk-around check at the start of your shift?

I usually show around ten minutes but have been informed that the fifteen minutes ‘Other Work’ has to be recorded. I have searched the regulations and previous posts but can find no definitive answer.

There isn’t a definitive answer as to whether it should be 10, 15 or even 30 minutes, but simply driving off after a 9 or 11 hour rest shows you haven’t checked your lights, tyres or load security, if you have checked them, then you have not had a proper rest period of either 9 or 11 hours

Thank you Mr Wheel Nut. That clears that up for me. I usually insert the new chart after I’ve clearly had a 9 hour or 11 hour break, usually have a 10/15 minute buffer to be sure to be sure, (say 11 hour break is up at 05:25 I insert new chart at 05:35) I then put it on hammers and do my check. Kettle is boiled by the time I’m done

Is say ten minutes checking time sufficient to keep the VOSA men happy though?

If it’s your regular truck then yes - I’ll bet you take longer if it’s a not your usual truck

Obviously Rog.

Obviously Rog.

That is the sensible way that VOSA will view it as well

Actually . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Which piece of actual legislation would be transgressed if I did put my card in at 0602 then began driving at 0605 ? (Assuming of course I’d ejected my card the previous evening at 2058 hrs)

I would say none, because 3 minutes should be enough to empty your ■■■■ bottle out of the window and fill your vehicle defect sheet in with no defects.

Your problem come 20 minutes later at the VOSA checkpoint who calmly point out that some scroat nicked all your bulbs and lenses and you have a split tyre

Oh now look what you have done, you will bring all the folks out of the woodwork who are convinced VOSA go round nicking bits off lorries to improve their conviction rate

They maybe nick the bits of th elorries to stick into there BBQ’s? That maybe why they call them rear tailights - CHEESEBURGERlights…?
