I do. Absolutely no idea why though. It’d take me days if I had to dig one back out though

No that’s what the card is for
No u are only required to keep 2 copies 1 for u and 1 for u r transport manager if u have any infringements and also write the reason why (on the back of them) u got the infringement. I.e. accident , weather. Etc.

if you have inadvertently made a mistake ie … forgot or were away from the vehicle when you went for your break IE on a site and weren’t able to go back to the truck – as soon as you can you do a print out and comments – don’t leave it until the end of the shift …
You have to keep a record of your hours and your driving time for 28 days the easiest way of doing this is a print out.
I also write in my diary
Monday 6-5pm - 8.12
Tuesday 6-4pm - 7.13
So that records my duty time, driving time and my rest can be calculated
Thanks for the replies.
I think what I might do then is keep a manual record just for my own reference and also if I need to see whether my wages are right this would benefit too. But in terms of print outs I will just use where I have made an error in records.

I have noticed on my theory training it says we must comply with the working time regulations 1998 is this the same as the working time directive?
I can imagine a lot of drivers have to opt out of the 48 hour working time directive as realistically in a week this will always go over if you count in ‘other work’ as well…

There’s NO opt out

Really I come from a retail management background and all the companies I worked for when I started with them offered me a declaration and I either had to agree to abide by the working time directive or sign to say I am happy to work over 48 hours per week if required… I thought that was required in any industry (excl. things such as armed forces) to show that you actually agreed to work more (or less) than 48 hours, should anything ever happen such as an employment tribunal…
Workers in the road transport industry are excluded from the opt out option:
gov.uk/maximum-weekly-worki … opting-out
This is probably different to your retail management background where presumably the opt out is permitted.

That’s not correct. There is no requirement for you to produce/keep printouts just because you got an infringement. Sometimes you’ll get an infringement simply because you forgot or miscalculated e.g. your break.
You are required to make (and keep) a printout with a written explanation on any occasion that it is necessary to deviate from the Regs, or to make a correction to the entries on the card. You are also required to make (and keep) printouts if the tacho fails during a journey, or if you lose your card (or it stops working) and you are waiting for a replacement to arrive.

and now your driving for a living which is Road transport as in the above kindly post by ORC your under a whole new set of rules
Yeah I had a feeling it may be exempt. Which is fine, I have always worked long hours in my previous jobs (And not been paid for the extras!)
Thanks for the help.

Under EU rules are manual records of ‘other work’ needed (to say what you were doing during this time? )

There is no requirement to record what you were actually doing, regardless of whether the record is being made automatically (by the tachogrpah mode switch being set to “Crossed Hammers”), manually using the tachograph or manually on the back of a printout or chart. You simply have to record Driving, Other Work, POA or Break.
Note that you are required to record your working times for all shifts in the week if you do any in-scope driving during that fixed week. This gets to be important if you only do occasional driving work, with your main employment being in another job.
That clears things up well, cheers.
