Recommend a map

In need of a new road map that covers the UK. I have a UK atlas and a tomtom which is great but I love having a backup…paper doesn’t need electricity

Looking at these three but anybody know the difference between the two or can recommend me a better one:

  1. az.co.uk/?nid=30&iid=8915
  2. az.co.uk/?nid=30&iid=8918
    and
  3. az.co.uk/?nid=30&iid=8917

Many thanks in advance

The difference between those three is the scale used, the most expensive one is 2.5 inches on the map equals 1 mile on the ground, I’d go for that scale as it shows more detail. A better option would be a truckers atlas with bridge heights included as those three don’t say they have bridge heights on them.

Yeah, if you must carry a paper map, it might as well be usefull.

I have a philips truck atlas as a backup, although it’s not been out of my bag in 5yrs - and is seriously out of date lol

I always used the AA version but some drivers like the Philips better.

The 2nd 1 is the new version of mine, which I’ve no complaints about - but haven’t really used…

For price, I’d go with the AA one though - since it’d get as much use

I have the Philips Atlas, which is fantastic, even though it tends to spend most of it’s time in my car boot! I now use a truck sat nav.
The only critisism of the Phillips is that, being hardback and spiral bound, its not so easy to carry around in a drivers bag. After a few months the wire spriral had caught on the inside of my bag and started to ripp the pages, and the hard back being so rigid, had started to tear off. If i buy a new one, I would go for the AA simply because it is easier to fold into a bag.

When i was on irregular runs i always kept an AA height map, and a Collins.

Collins best for general use as it showed every roundabout as distinct from other junctions, would only really use the height map for the obvious.

They also had very useful urban area maps, especially London which was split into about 4 pages of overview and several more of central street view, though with each reprint the urban areas became fewer.

AA truckers come in 2 scales, i have both.
The extra large scale is very good but too unwieldy for a quick nose whilst at the traffic lights.

Satnav IMO is not a route finder for trucks and i would not use one as such, it is a convenient pocket sized street map of the whole country, i make use of its traffic info whilst en route, and only use it guide me in the last couple of miles in strange towns…find me own way to the area i need to be.

I’ve still got these Philips county maps I had when I was trucking in the last decade. One for every county  When I’m back trucking again I might carry the ones I am more likely to use but in my work bag I always carry the truckers atlas with the height limits, the truckers guide to London, probably that handbook too plus my satnav and the other [[[[stuff]]]] I would need to carry :unamused:

Thanks guys I will deff consider the ones you have recommended…Anybody use the tomtom go 7000 truck?? is it reliable??

The telly is!!!

If you head round the South Circ from the M4 at Chiswick, the railway bridge just before the National Archives is not shown on the Phillips atlas and afaik, was recently resurfaced so height info in the image may be slightly different now
