Receiving radio one,two and four abroad?

Anybody know how,if i can receive radio 1,2,4 abroad without the use of the internet?,are them world radio’s any good at receiving these stations?.As thats what i miss most abroad.

You will be able to pick up radio 4 on 198khz and the BBC world service on I believe 633mhz or what ever they call them things nowadays. Radio 1 & 2 is only transmitted on FM so unless it was being relayed for the Brit armed forces bases there I wouldn’t think that reception is normally possible, except for the odd occasion of propagation irregularities.

loads of topics on here about English radio abroad, but there is quite a choice.
this is what I listened to travelling to Paris / Brussels / Frankfurt (used to have English speaking radio all the way)

Talksport 1053 1089 - this used to fade out around ‘Chemalot’ on the dutch / German border

Radio 4 on longwave (see above post)

World service (see above post)

BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting transmits on FM)- can get this from Koln to half way down the A3 and most of Northern Germany (anywhere near British Army bases) as well as round Brussels

Aside from English speaking radio, Arrow rock from the Netherlands on AM is a good music station with hardly any speech and can be received all over Northern Europe. Q-radio in Belgium is pretty good as well.
AFN (American Forces Network - FM) - can pick this up on the A3 where BFBS fades (transmits from Wiesbaden I believe) and can get it most of the way down to stuttgart (or anywhere near a european USAF / US army base) I think i used to pick it up round Pisa as well

It all depends on the weather and local interference for Radio 4 on 198LW. I can pick it up most evenings between Toulouse and Agde, whereas around Marseille there’s no chance of hearing it. Rather than have to listen to local stations all the time I Iinvested in a TeckNet FM transmitter (£8) so I can listen to podcasts of British programs, helps pass the time on boring autoroutes.

Internet radio is the way froward, but Radio 4 is available in many places, the quality varies on the weather and time of day, but part of the fun of listening to the Archers is the poor signal. If you cannot get it, there is always the weekend omnibus for diehard fans.

and 5live till about the brussel ring rd on a sunday night then as said to radio4 for the shipping forcast and its theme music “sailing by” then its time to park up zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Anyone remember a station called something like Radio Free Europe (IIRC!) in the 80`s broadcast in Germany. English speaking, with American accents, I think it actually was broadcast from Russia!!

I remember how boring the VOA became. Voice of America with English language for foreigners repeated for a week :stuck_out_tongue:

I get talking books from my local library their great for the long boring motorways like Osnabruck to Hamburg.
so once i loose the long wave i pop a disc in and do my own play for the day.

the MW for the world service is gone now due to the cutbacks :imp:
in the night i can get radio 4 as far south as the andalucia border but in the daytime it only gets as far as bordeaux before there’s too much interference.
on the south coast of france there’s riviera radio from monaco on 106.5 fm, germany and some parts of benelux plus 2 places in spain you can get BFBS and AFN the eagle from the US of A.
anywhere else i listen to my podcasts, i couldn’t miss the archers

Podcast are the best

Believe it or not, I pick up Capital Gold around Bordeaux as clear as if I was in London! I have listened to Radio 5 and Talksport down in Portugal. Personally, I think a lot depends on the quality and how well tuned your aerial is.
Another cracking station on FM is Nostalgie. In France it is not so good as they play alternate French and English tracks ( quite amusing to bounce down the road to Edith Piaff) BUT it also broadcast in Belgium and much of Holland and it is very good. Hardly any talking and all english tracks.

French radio by law has to play at least 50% french music i belive!

But there is still some good French music, certainly some good underground Reggae and Senegalese music.

couldn’t agree more
every week i download the archers omnibus, chris evans, steve wright, danny baker, desert island discs, rhod gilbert, frank skinner, and many, many more
the best thing is as well my stereo accepts sd cards and a usb stick so its just like receiving it in fm quality

Thankfully it’s only a third french music, although when you have to live with that statistic that’s still far too much

Some stations like Nova seem to get around that law, but like most stations here the quality of reception varies from region to region.

Let’s hope that one day we get XM radio like the Yanks, broadcasting via satelite, that way you could listen to BBC radio live anywhere in Europe . . . dream on!

hello paul
one of our lads does, he plugs his iphone into the stereo of his new xf105.510 and listens to radio 5live all day, the first week he did it in france until he got the bill for using the tinterweb roaming    he only uses it in spain now

That is correct about the French radio,it must be in French,if a foreign tune is played, the next one must be in their own language, something to do with their cultural minister, who is trying to preserve the language.

this thread makes me think about Brits in Benidorm. they make a bee-line for a British pub, or Paddy’s bar.
when in France, listen to French radio, it’s ok, as you can’t smell them.
