Reasonable?

Would you say that a run to Newcastle from Doncaster followed by a run from Doncaster to Warrington is a fair nights work for a £100 (not me) a shift?

Yes

With no hard graft and little waiting time, yes.

If it can be done in 9 hours max including a 45 minute break then just about bearable till a proper job comes up.

it’s only 200 miles. and at 50 mph, that’s 4 hours driving, then parked up for the night.
prety cushy.

Sorry did not make myself clear, Doncaster to Newcastle–Newcastle to Doncaster–Doncaster to Warrington–Warrington to Doncaster Finish Total Mileage (google earth) 396. this is a night shift.

Well i have done Preston>>> Skelmersdale to load then to Ford @ Dagenham and return to Preston in years gone by, in the day time that’s a full 10hrs drive, and i got paid less
The job could always pay a bit more, but it’s on it’s arras ,and times are hard , so it’s a case of if it’s acceptable ,then put up with it for now, But looking at the planned jobs,

Doncaster>>Newcastle upon tyne = is just over 200mile /330km and return to doncaster that alone is gonna take 7-8hrs drive time
Run 2 Doncaster >> Warrington 67 miles or 108km = around 1hr + return doncaster = 1-1.5 hrs drive that’s your 10 done or the best part of it , providing there are no delays on the road network

if its just driving, and you get a clear run, then yeah its do-able, fair old run though.
we do, (on nights b.t.w) basildon to merthyr-tydfil and back. just a straight run, trailer swap and back, but you know 1 big hold up anywhere and your gonna be screwed. surprisingly enough, its my least favorite run but its all swings and roundabouts.

i could back flip it with a sack of potatoes on my back in 9 hours with my eyes shut

200 mile takes 8hours what’s you on a push bike ?

I used to do B`ham to Gateshead, which was just shy of 200 miles, so Doncaster to Newcastle is about 120, Doncaster to Warrington is about 85 miles. The round trip mileage is around the 400 mark.

am i right in thinking the £100 is in your pocket/after tax?
if so, then it’s fair enough. but if there’s tax off it, then it’s not worth a toss.

And thats exactly why the jobs [zb] now!!!

In the late 1970’s I did a night job that involved up to 2 hrs shunting and a trunk to Newcastle from Middleton. 11hrs job & finish guaranteed, good basic & time & half.
Scotch trunk changed over at Beatock until some dipstick agreed to run straight through to Paisley with Sedac & turbo 180 Gardner, 40mph limit on A74, M8 not complete through Glasgow. Said driver picked up 2 times for speeding, must have been downhill with that lump, started having nights off and they asked me to do it one night, no thanks.

I make it about 8 hours driving, which leaves you an hour for ■■■■■■■ about getting on bays etc. So perfectly reasonable IMHO.

How about this a mate ran from Ashford to Nuneaton parked up time off then swapped trailers then down to Staples Corner back to Northumberland TM say 6.5 hrs

Would like a pint of what he is on

Need anybody ask why we CANNOT get rates of pay up in the Transport Industry with statements like this!
Then again, there’s always ONE!

Not sure Doncaster - Newcastle is 330 kms single. I do Washington to fradley park nr Lichfield & return every night, 7hrs driving & 603kms total. It all depends on which way you go of course. You should be able to do that original job with time to spare. As for the cash that’s up to you, do you think it’s worth it? If you don’t do it someone else will.

If you drive to the limits then you have done your best. If you can’t get it done, then it is the TM’s fault or whoever planned the route. So night out and be happy. TM’s always push as hard as possible. I had Hampshire empty to Peterborough, load then down to Beckton, E3. Wait for load to be sorted into Yorkes. Tip Bow, Central London, Harrow and Hounslow. I nighted out in Hounslow for 9 hours.
TM soon changed the route to leave out Bow, so now 8.5 hours driving, 12 hour spread. happy days.
Do your best, just don’t kill yourself trying too hard.

Try a 450+mile round trip from the yard nr Preston to the ford plant at Dagenham was always 4hrs over with going via skem it took nearly 5hrs,and that was without any traffic delays, coming back was a little quicker but only if no accidents or other delays en route, and providing you got tipped within a reasonable amount of time,

I can get from barnsley to durham back to leeds. Then from leeds to durham back to barnsley in a 10 hour drive. But sometimes only make it as far as weatherby and have to night out.
