I am about to get started with my ADR, why only petrol tank jobs seems to pay a good wage? Any other pays ok? Gas? Heating oil?

Why should Road Haulage be any different.

There’s some fly-by-night agency advertising bitumen tanker jobs up here at the moment. Class 1. Days, nights, weekends… you know the score… £7.50 p/h :grimacing:

Say what you want, it will not always means more money but most of the time it can. Bottom line is, if require ADR then only a driver with ADR can carry.

More power to whoever got it.
At my work they which is general haulage they have to carry it time to time and they call an agency as no one from the company has it so they offered me £1 hour extra on my wages, doesn’t matter if I carry it or not.

So Yes, in my case I would say it means more money.

We do ADR 1, which sounds impressive, but trust me, if I ever am in the position of having to plough into the back of one of my loaded trailers or a petrol tanker, I’ll be heading for mine as the chances of anything happening are infintismally small.

We pay for the ADR course and it’s four days and frankly if I ask any of my lads something about it two weeks later, the memory has started going. Really all that is needed with out stuff, is ring the police, fire and a specialist number, keep members of the public away, depending on quantity you may try and put it out. I’ve been shifting the same stuff for 25 years and there hasn’t been a hint of a problem touches a lot of wood.

I’m not sure petrol tankers do pay that much more these days? A lot of it seems to have been outsourced - I know some of the lads come on with us and reckon it’s a stepping stone to petrol tankers, but they never make the move.

I’m not saying BTW, that some ADR shouldn’t attract a better rate, but depending on the product, the danger can be minimised significantly.

Can’t see why the driver should be paid that much higher than normal as it’s the haulier that’s got the extra expence not the driver ,then the haulier has to factor the extra expence in to the rate and try to make it work .

I know what you mean Dan, but the fault lies in the rate and whether the haulier is daft enough to do it for that rate.
The driver should not have to subsidise said crap rate that his boss just accepts.

It’s like the old…‘‘If driver’s wages go up, food in the shops will go up’’ maybe so, but why should drivers have to bear the brunt of that on their backs.
