Ready for the off

Hi all,

Having passed my class C on Friday (May 4th) my plan is to attempt C+E asap. I have been told that its difficult to get a full time driving job unless you have at least 18 months experience. I guess i’ll need to find some agency work in the meantime. I live on the Devon/Somerset border. Can anyone give me some advice as to where I should go or what I should do next?

Many thanks

Congrats on the pass the force was obviously with u that day young Jedi

Your best bet is the agencies I’m afraid dar posted on the agency thread of who he went with so mabe give them a ring as your in an about the same area good luck with finding work and good luck with your c+e when you go for it

Jx

Thankyou Jennie, I will do just that. Young Jedi…no! old ■■■■ looking for a new way of life…yes :open_mouth: . I enjoyed reading your 1st C+E adventure, fantastic stuff well done! any tips on initial rigid driving (should I get any work)?

Jedi s are very old my dear so your still a young un like me

But one bit of advice is make sure you have enough fuel in your lorry unlike my very first run lol I learnt the hard way , just take it easy and don’t try to rush anything always ask if your not sure about anything , honest people will be all to happy to help if u explain that it’s your first time , you will not be able to do a run as fast as a regular guy who has been on the job years so just do it in your own time rushing causes mistakes and puts un needed pressure on yourself you will be fine and don’t forget take some pics and look forward to reading your first run post
Enjoy

Ps a good book that helped me and is very dog eared now was the truckers handbook lots of info on gears , different tail lifts etc and uncoupling is covered too , also has service areas at the back of book too by area easy to read some good info to help you

May the 4th be with you young Jedi

If Taunton is not too far to travel, try Driver Hire. There’s also a few agencies in Exeter although I can’t personally recommend or dissuade you of any of them.

Jennie thanks for your advice, I will seek a copy of the truckers handbook, I need to learn about coupling, service areas, parking locations etc etc. I will post about my virginal run (if it proves to be worth a read).
Thanks Dar. I live about 9 miles from Taunton. As well as your recommendation for Diver hire in Taunton ( from another post of yours) I have been advised to talk to ‘John’ at the same place, is this the guy you dealt with? A neighbour suggested Blue Arrow at Bridgwater…any thoughts?
Plan is to make contact with a few on Tuesday after the bank holiday. Do I assume correctly that there is more agency work for C+E?

Thanks again

John is the guy to talk to.

Blue arrow have never offered me anything even though they are constantly advertising. Not saying you will have the same result, But…!!

3663 at Taunton is a big contract for DH so you will probably have some regular work in there.

Best of luck and let us know how you go.

PS you would be far more employable with CE on your license although may not get Artic work on day 1.

Thanks Dar, will contact John on Tuesday!
