I don’t even see how these smart motorways help. Half the time the shoulder is closed off, and when it isn’t you end up cutting in and out of it as its for the junction exit only.
Its the cheap (in their eyes) answer to allowing at least 10% and rising too high a population onto a fixed land mass without the means to provide adequate infrastructure.
The answer lay in the ballot box, it has for the last 4 decades right back to 1973 really but the electorate chose to wear blinkers and enjoyed the bread and circuses they were bought with, not sure quite what the solution is now short of throwing even more borrowed money at it.
They’ve kinda got the right idea with the A14 works they’re due to start soon. Just build a new one. Then when it’s open take the central res out and you’ve got a 5 lane road going east, and another going west.
And next February they are starting the stretch between J13 and J15 on the M6 as well - great fun

With the variable speed limits, maybe they can raise the cash they need to do a proper job from speeding fines!
