One reads a lot about “Banging on doors” and making cold calls etc, but I’ve yet to hear of a GOOD job that’s been landed that way.
Well i’ve got a good job and it wasnt advertised… I work for a proper haulage company, not one of these companies that make you do another driving test when you rock up, just, “can you drive this?”, never hassled, never pulled into the office because you’ve stopped for a crap at services, given thanks for a job well done… You get the picture…

Plenty of work available at Stobarts Goole if you want to work for them numerous vacancies but all involve weekend working though.
You’ll actually be paid Starving Northerner’s rates. You’d never get away with such low pay here in the southeast, so Boss just won’t bother opening a large depot here in Kent, Surrey, or Southeast London for instance. Don’t get me wrong - personally, I wouldn’t mind having a swagger on the agency at ESL, but there just ain’t any around my neighbourhood!
I was offered work at ESL by a local agency - £8.50/hr, no overtime rate - promises galore . . . and that was Ltd rates!

Same here I phoned up knowing the company ran a few trucks locally to me on the off chance they may want another driver based there and hey presto, office staff very polite and helpfull, good work clean motors fair pay etc always the best way to go about getting a job imo get a list of companies you fancy working for and get knocking or phoning if they ain’t local
…Problem is, I dunno who I fancy working for, as from the outside looking in there always seems to be a lack of info.
Connections seem better than adverts when it comes to picking up a plum job.
I don’t really have any connections, so I have only the bragged hourly rates of others to go by on places like this board.
I’d very much like a job that I can pay my mortgage off with, but no one ever seems to talk about “dead man’s shoes” jobs where you can at least get your name down for a couple of years down the line. (needs to be a large fleet operator of course) Saints was the last firm I saw advertising around here, but at 75 miles around the M25, it’s a bit too far for me to commute. If Boris Island had been built, Saints would have opened a yard on my doorstep I’m sure. Bloody NIMBYs!
Meanwhile, I’ll carry on lowballing it until the economy improves, or we get rid of the “new” Tories - whichever comes first.
If we get out of Europe, it would be a game changer to be sure.
Cameron won’t do it. That bullcrap yesterday is an attempt to placate the rebels only. Only a referendum done and dusted in THIS parliament will save both his arse, and the Tories in general.
…Unless of course this country really IS full of 4x4 driving closet tories who secretly hate everyone else doing a different job to them, and strongly subscribe to the Tory “pull the ladder up” manifesto of “give it all to yourselves, the firm, and Brussels. Palm off the rank&file staff with naff all”.
Don’t get me started!
Vote Conservative, Get Cameron.
Vote David, get Ed.
Vote Cleggy, get Brussels

This is such a bad job they must have 15 agencies trying to get drivers. The agencies near to Goole all had the contract to supply drivers but could not keep them so they keep going to agencies further out who advertise that they have been awarded the contract, you just no they will not last.
As soon as I got the call off my boss and told that my depot will be going into a consultation period for redundancy I put myself on the market. I’ve now taken voluntary redundancy and start for my next employer in 2 weeks.
Technique that has never failed for me is to write a typed letter with an attached CV to local firms in speculation of any current or upcoming vacancies. Send the letter in the post addressed to the transport dept so it actually lands on someone relevants desk.
When job hunting I used to carry a pen and paper with me in the car, any new firm I spotted that ran trucks I would write down then go home and research. If they were based within commuting distance they got a letter.
Thankfully I have never been out of work, so never in a rush to find work. If I was more desperate I would probably take a more direct approach. I have managed to stay in work by being proactive, the ■■■■ was clearly hitting the fan in my last job so I put myself on the market and got out, some others didn’t bother then were whining when they found themselves redundant. I’d rather be in work than get a redundancy pay out.
