I used to cover a vast number of prisons delivering their “canteen” (treats).
Many of the open prisons I visited (Kirklevington, askham grange, Hatfield grange, Sudbury etc), id have to wait for them returning from their day jobs. Many have cars (Sudbury), bicycles or used the prison mini buses and public transport
More often than not I’d actually be sat at the back of the room when the DHL staff dished it out, or I’d be sat watch TV with the cons. At askham grange the infamous Mrs Canoe actually worked at Iceland in York. But that place was a country house with all mod cons
if they do this the i think that once passed and gained employment a fee should be taken from the wage to pay for the training,
however where is this driver shortage??
with the building trade going ■■■■ up and the cost of fuel its only a matter of time before there are more drivers then jobs!!
our local press used to have loads of driving jobs advertised, latelty all you get are agancies advertising for short contracts to cover holiday period.

hiya,
peter sutcliffe already has a class1 save a few bob there sorry to have brought this oldie back to life thanks harry long retired
No, it’s relevant Harry, the only problem he has spent 27 years proving he is not insane. If he took a lorry drivers job they would know he is not cured

Just shows how driving for a living is held in such high esteem in this country
Free training to,right Im off to rob a bank
Right lets set a few things straight : not eveyone inside is in for crimes of evil but what kind of gets up my nose is the fact that some of you seem to think you or your occupation is above someone who has PAID the debt to this (zb) up society, trust me there are people who you on the surface of it might think are respectable and I have met a few but the reality is that they are either ■■■■■■ or just evil and have never been inside. trust thecoder0 when i say there are straighter people inside than some of the scum are on the outside
I agree coder, but I would guess that most of the ones the govt will offer this chance to will be those who are youngish, probably been inside for theft usually to pay for their drug abuse, Iknow it says different in the article but as majority of prisoners do have a habit. . Although I will agree that some wil, have and can make a full turnaround of their life and follow the straight and narrow, the fact is that most will not especially when tempatation is placed before them, a few K,s worth of a load, especially as there old assocoates will prob still be around…
I,m not sure that in this current climate hauliers will risk anything to employ them, especially when there are and will be experienced drivers without a crim record about.
I have worked at young offenders and cat a prison and out of both I would say only a very small % were,nt using drugs…
So all that hard work saving up for your HGV tuition, Your theory test, And now that driver cpc. Was a waste of time.
You should have robbed an old women of her pension, ruined the rest of her life, Gone to prison, Played on your free playstation, Got three meals a day at our expense. Then be trained to drive HGV’s. Now you can import cocaine in bulk, You may get some extra cash from the terrorist imigrants.
Well done labour you’ve got it right again.
talking about this at work today, 1 guy made a valid point and it would not surprise me if it happened,
that the govt would give the employer some sort of incentive, be it part wage or a one off fee ect.to employ the ex cons, possibly as some sort of early release system?
make sense to me, prison overcrowding comes down, and gov can say they are trying to help the haulage industry. but back in the real world!
I zb’d up a few years back and ended up at Bishopriggs then Castle Huntley (Dundee) for 18 months , what I noticed is most cons are in for drugs and motoring offences so 90% of them are ruled out anyway, of the few remaining many will go back to their old lifestyle, but there are a few like myself that regard the time inside as a bloody huge wake up call and seek new directions and rehabilitation. However trying to use the prison system to find rehabilitation is nigh on impossible. I was very lucky and succeeded and ended up working in IT (CNC Programming) based on a course I took in prison, I got my anger problem under control too!
For me I was successfully reintegrated into society and haven’t re-offended, growing up played a part too, without my time at The Farm I’d still be ■■■■ just older.
What I’m trying to say is there are a few prisoners out there that need what I got, but so often they are treat like cattle and the ones that could make something out of themselves using courses offered are often overlooked. On the other hand though, there are some that will be ■■■■■ all their miserable lives and make a good argument for mandatory euthanasia.
Oh great!
I’ve been saving for ages to afford my class 1, and all I’ll have to do now is go give a chav a slap. I’ll get a free holiday with free gym, dvd, playstation etc, then on return get trained for my Class 1 for free, bonus, and who says crime don’t pay?!
I been a good boy all my life and ive got nothing. I know of people who arnt so good and have a lot.
So in conclusion i would say crime does pay. Just im not scumbag enough to attempt it.
