RDC's and Health & Safety

Can anyone tell me how it is that, when I go to Tesco,Sainsburys, costco and many other RDC’s, i am not allowed to stay in my vehicle, but must stay in an area specifically for drivers. I can not enter the warehouse, or return to my vehicle until they have finished unloading me. this is for “Health and Safety reasons” BUT When I go to Netto, lidl morrisons etc, not only do I have to enter the warehouse, i have to use equipment that i have not been assessed on, and that i have not been able to carry out user checks on, i have to unload my vehicle without supervision, break down any mixed pallets by hand, if double stacked pallets, I have to walk around the warehouse in amongst pickers, forklifts etc to request a FL driver to unstack my pallets, and must wait in the warehouse, near my goods, until they are checked. And i am told that this is ok with “health & Safety”
how can two directly opposite policies both be ok with “Health & Safety”?

It’s called double standards, one group work to one standard, and the other group to another standard.

Health and safety is a very flexible criteria, you adapt it to suit your own requirements. This doesn’t necessarily apply uniformly within a company. Each site applies it’s own interpretation thereby ensuring that we mortals will always be in the wrong.

Does this answer your question? Probably not, but waffle always helps.

RDC stands for “RUE the DAY you CAME”

you sure about that?

i have never unloaded my own vehicle at Morrisons, the most i have done is open the curtains for the forklift to unload it.

i think you mean Lidl, Aldi and Netto, they all have one thing in common, they are all German companies

Dont wish to be pedantic but I beleive that only Aldi is German, Lidl being Austrian (possibly same thing according to Hitler!) and Netto is Swedish.

I tipped at Aldi Middleton today and still had to hand my keys in even though you tip yourself. :open_mouth:

i used to work in sainsburys rdc and the reason i was told is because a driver was asleep in one of his trucks and knocked the handbrake off while a flt was exiting the trailer , the trailer rolled away from the dock door and the flt went off the back of the trailer. unfortunatly the flt driver died in the accident .

as for not allowed in the w/house its just down to security mostly and a few other factors .

if you enter the w/house in netto they probably have liability insurance for public to enter the w/house premises where as sainsburys dont unless traning on h&s is given to make the insurance valid.

also its to prevent the risk of the company being suied if a driver is hit by a fork lift or if the coolers blow up and fill the room with anti freeze fog (yes it does happen … often)

there is one or 2 reasons anyway .

i dont think the depots have a problem with you staying in your cab if you un hitch and move away from the trailer . well actually it might fry there brains as they cant think of a h&s risk about that.

They maybe can’t, but someone will :stuck_out_tongue:

oh yea forgot to say as long as you find a trailer stand lol

Having got a bit of experience in that ‘Billy-no-mates’ area, I suggest that they can often reflect the character & arguably the pedantry of the risk assessor. Or the place has had a prang in the bits that are (overly?) focussed upon, so they tighten it accordingly albeit often to the detriment of the non-idiots.

For some uncommunicated reason, my current place forbids mobile earpieces in the warehouse (& the H&S bint is obnoxious & rude too) but their sister RDC’s don’t give a monkeys.

Because of that, and not wanting to break the fragile ear-clip, I’m at a loss where to keep such a delicate bit of kit when transitioning through the damned place to get to the transport office. (Obviously, were it not to go back in my head I’d wedge it up the H&S bint’s ■■■■).

you know the old saying

"Them that can, DO
them that can’t TEACH
Them that ain’t got a f*ing clue WRITE THE HEALTH & SAFETY

Lidl is German, headquarters are near Stuttgart, and from the seventies to the nineties they only operated in Germany. I’ve delivered computer kit to their head office and while hanging about saw some stuff on their history.

Oh and Netto are Danish but hey 1 out of 3 aint bad. :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

used to tip it myself at morrison stockton if i had 5/6 pallets on, then strip them down if needed, only used to do it as was on job and finish and didnt want to sit on bay for 2/3 hrs.
this is fridges not tauts so maybe why youve never tipped it yourself.
1/2 yrs ago so things may have changed but still have to go in and help strip down pallets to get drop and drive

dont know why but id have to agree, it wasnt long ago youd self tip at sommerfield ,cardinal then go to lea green , sit in the cab and theyd tip you.
co-op alferton, osset go in warehouse and self tip-stoke,leicester stay in cab when they tip you.
now leicester since new health and safety bod arrived you have to park at end of yard waiting for bay, your not allowed to wait in cab , you have to go in canteen and he tells you when bays free, you then go out ,put it on bay then back in canteen, i can see why they dont want you in cab when your on bay but why when your down the end of the yard waiting for a bay  ,cant see it myself.
its like one of our collections, were now due to health and safety not allowed to lift bay door or put on leveler[they do let us hang keys on bay door], yet aldi,liddl,co-op[some] you open the door, put the leveler on and thats o.k.
as someone said above depends who does h+s on that site

i have tipped at Sainsburys with fridges and tauts, never tipped myself, but have had to split down, Sainsburys Hoddesdon, you have to stand inside the warehouse by the door that your trailer is on and split down if needed, Aldi, i have tipped and split, same as Lidl, but i have never tipped or split the loads at any Morrisons whether it be on fridges or tauts, the only thing i have done is open up the trailer for them

splitting at morrisons is to get drop and drive, dont know whether you have to or not, but stobarts[our depot managment say you have too].
just put memo on wall and it s on about were insured to be in warehouse and that theres no hard and fast rule of how much of load[25/50%], if they want you too you may have to do all 26 palls on your own[never done that many].
self tip ive only ever done it at morr stockton,no other morrisons.only done one saisburys, hams hall, they tipped it while you sat in rest room

The difference maybe that at Netto as far as i know you sign a form to say you are competent to operate the machinery? I suppose ultimateley they can all impose their own rules/conditions for use on their own sites. The sites that make you drive round with your hazards on whilst on site make me laugh, thats illegal to do on a highway, probably for safety reasons.

Mike-C:
‘…Netto … impose their own rules/conditions…’

Any food store showing an image of a dog drooling into a shoppin basket for its logo gets avoided here.

How can dog-slaver on a shopping basket handle ever be healthy or safe, ie, against toxicara canis (worms that can cause blindness in humans)? …Flippin weirdos.
