I will edit these later. This was a 140 I drove in Swiss. That year it was 34c% below. Old ME outfit. Deisel tanks on tralier were connected by hoses to the tank on the truck.
Alternator up the shoot. I drove back from Porto to Swiss like that.( first trip with the Road Commander
)
This was on the beach outside the Mosquito nightclub in Casteldafels nr. Barna.Nice quiet place to sleep
You notice I`ve got those flat American mirrors. Great on the straight but hopeless for tucking her in reversing with a trailer. The whole thing was USA spec. It came with those air horns ,they had a thick plaited cord you pulled. It was inside just above the door, drivers side of course. It had an alarm clock fitted so that when it woke you up the cab had been heated for you. the fifth wheel slider was operated from a switch in the cab. The cab tilt was auto. No pumping.
I have loads more
Will get them out sometime this week
Harry, how did you like that 2+3 wagon and drag axle setup? Coming from my
3+2 outfit in England (very stable) to a similar setup here I found the ‘tail
wagging the dog’ syndrome took a bit of getting used to. Also my English
wagon had bodies of equal size, maybe another factor.
2+3 is the best you can get. Short bodied truck & a long trailer. 6m +8m. You also needed a 2m A bar. They follow perfectly & easy to reverse. The tail didnt wag this dogs tail. I think the truck weighed 8/9 tons empty. In Swiss the weight limit is 28t . But 10ks from the border it used to be 34t for import/export .When I loaded scrap copper over the other side of the mountain from Basel I would have to drive with 12t in the trailer & the truck empty back to Basel. Then leave the trailer at the border & return to load the truck. Its quiet a long steep descent but I never got one wobble. The exhaust brake on the Scania had the control on the steering column .It was a spring loaded lever .You kept two hands on the wheel and applied the exhauster..Good old motor. I uloaded At Brussels airport in a blizzard It was a steep dip that backed on to the ramp. Backed the trailer down but the cargo was on the truck. Emptied the truck and now had to hitch the fully loaded trailer .Pull her up a snow packed ramp. The empty artic next to me had to give up. The old Scania didn
t even slip. But I did have snow tyres…
Vilar Formosa. Got the blow out on a sharp rock on the Portuguese side before there was a motorway. The Border closed in 15 minutes for the night & opened again in 9 hours. I got the blow out 300 m. before the Spanish side & kept on going. Slept the night & changed the wheel next morning. In the morning on both sides of the border were hundreds of truck waiting to get thru.
Dover /Calais. I had just spent my summer holiday in UK renovating that trailer.
Morocco. My old rig. Seldom serviced but never broke down ( & you could over ride the limiter by thumping the gas pedal a couple of times. you wouldnt believe it but a young Moroccan guy smuggled himself to Cadiz between the chassis of that unit. He had spread eagled himself over the prop-shaft. The front of his shirt was polishing the prop. I had raised the suspension to get off the ferry. The Spanish Police checked the truck for illegals & gave me the all clear . I was about to drive in Spain for about 4 hours non-stop. The suspension wouldn
t level its self. That saved his life. His boot had broken the wire on one of the sensors & so the suspension didnt work. He had only come from the boat to the dockside like that . I was the only truck on the boat. the good news is." I saved your life." The bad news is ."You
re nicked!"
My old girl in Swiss
What was the advantage of Trilex wheels?
Are they easier to change or just stronger
They are a disadvantage to a Uk driver , but if you have to change the actual tyre they are much easier to do alone on the side of the road. The wheel is in 3 pieces & with a special lever can be dismantled & reassembled in the new tyre in a matter of minutes. But you have to check those nuts every day. They are definetly not stronger. They get out of shape & go oval. There are many probs with those old things.
This was my first truck as O/D in the old Vilar Formosa Customs Park.( With a flat tyre )
Are you swiss Harry or just lived there ?
routier:

Harry did you ever come into Commercial Plastics Cramlington late 70s Used to work out of there & got alot of swiss & austrian wagon & drags in.Seeing the picture of yours rang a bell I
m sure I`ve seen it somewhere allthough the old grey cells are not what they were
greek No ,I would remember it if I did. That old wagon & drag was used mainly for Nylswiss ( Yarn ) work in the UK. Then load groupage back to Swiss. That snap was taken when I had just come down to Swiss from Hamburg. It was near Schaffhausen area…
