Rather embarasing

cliffton 27:
as some of you guys may know i start back tramping monday morning at nuttalls so had to go in this morning to run through a few things and go out for a short drive with the guy who runs the workshop well this is were it all went wrong it was a scania topline with a 3 over 3 manual box having driven many scanias before i have never driven a manual in fact i have only ever driven a manual truck 3 times and 1 was for my test
well it was shocking a just couldnt find 4th i was all over the place ( stiring soup i think the phrase is )
i know after my first full day in it il have it down to a fine art but just couldnt belive how much a struggled with it
also i dont it left the bossman with a massive deal of confidence in my ability o well gonna be fun on monday so if see a 54 plate slightly shabby looking topline reving its nuts off and crawling along give us a wave it will be me

I cut my teeth on 4 over 4, so when I first used the scanny 3 over 3, I still imagined it was a 4 over 4 with 1st and 5th unavailable, works for me :stuck_out_tongue:

I passed my first car test in a series 3 landy with overdrive, 16 possible forward combos and 4 reverse, 4 ‘gearsticks’ and the knowledge on what they all did, unlike the examiner.

2 black nobs, 1 yellow, 1 red.

That’s the one, only used the black ones though on test.

well my first full day in the manual and its been a doddle the box in this is a lot tighter than the one i drove on sat and so far so good :sunglasses:

The first car I ever owned was a series III. It didn’t have an overdrive when I got it, but it soon gained one.

Some of those scania manual boxes can be a right pain, when the H/L spliter is slow/lazy you find that you are trying to change cog before it has clunked in to High or Low, it was a lazy Low range change in the last one i drove, kept me on my toes a little, as the saying goes “if ya can’t find em, grind em,” or “it’s a gearbox not a (zb) dukebox”

Gearboxes are simple find first get it out the yard, nobody will ever be the wiser

The General Manager (who was a complete tool) at a firm I worked at took out one the 4 series Scanias with the manual box, he went out the yard changed up a couple of times and then right outside the office windows he very noisily went into 1hi instead of 4lo, he thought the splitter switch operated the range change

He took the motor into the workshop telling them the range change was NFG…they pointed out the collar that operated the range change without a hint of smugness or sarcasm

i got my 1st start 1996 and called my mate re advice (any)“get it out the yard as quietly as poss. and then “learn” to drive it” he said . so i did and i did, until i got back to yard (in an actros) lined it up to reverse, and realised i hadn"t a clue how to select reverse! >very quickly retreived the truck op manual from compartment (lordy me , this truck was all there!)quick scan and yeah , like , why didn"t i realise that ? it"s so obvious!!! once you know…

hows the job going cliff

good to here i think firms are starting to pick up work wise now which is all good

Just my 10 pence worth…
In my experience, any range change 'box when cold is generally a pig to get into the first gear in high range, whether it be fourth or fifth. I’m not sure of the exact reasons for this but I guess it’s to do with things being cold and the metal contracting, tightening things up. Best to miss the gate completely and let the old gal work for her money  FL’s also used to freeze in high range I seem to remember, which could be rather awkward at times.

An A series ERF with a 180 Gardner and a 6 speed David Brown with a splitter sorted the men from the boys you used to pass 2 telegraph poles between gear changes . In the 1980’s we had a 4 wheel Man Cabbed fridge box built in Romania badged as a Roman with a 6 speed coloumn change gearbox now that was fun . but after a while it was a dream to drive and so smooth you could pour a cup of coffee on the move without spilling a drop yer the good old days.

Dont ever get into a truck with an eaton twin split then FFS
Joking aside, i was the same back in 92 when i passed my C&E. You can get some pretty good tunes outa them when your abit green.
You also have one up on me as Ive never driven anything but manuals. I got in a Merc with that EPS thing when it very first came out in the early 90’s. Would’nt have the first clue in how to operate one those even now!!!

I drove eaton over decades and no Problem

You see,in old Times the Lorry didnt get Time to cool down :grimacing:

I had a V reg Merc once that had a 6 speed with a range-change, but 1st was forward nearest the driver and 6th, furthest away and back. That is the only time I struggled. Not in the truck, but trying to set off in 3rd everytime I got back in my car…
I started off by driving a different truck with a different box every day. Eaton TS, that Fuller? (or eaton?) with an H patern but 1st and 2nd as normal, 3rd in the usual 4th position and 4th where 3rd would normally be, basically round in and anti-clockwise circle.
The best box I even had was a 520 Iveco that was origonally a SAMT, but had been converted to manual change, back to an ordinary Eaton TS. It had been run in as an Auto and when bits were unavailable to repair it, converted back to normal operation and it was a smooth as silk.
I don’t have much problem with boxes now, 10 minutes and I don’t have to think about it, however, finding the door handle to get out, that really is the one that gets me struggling on so many motors.
