Rather embarasing

then when your used to a scania 3 over 3, jump in a volvo 3 over 3 and it’s a different pattern, jut to keep you on your toes

If you turn up for a test on an agency job and the gearbox is starnge to you - SAY SO. Admit it. There is no shame in not being experienced in all the combinations and the tester would much rather you ask and be shown than for you to be grinding the teeth off the gears.

when I was on agency few firms bothered with a test - “Here’s the keys drive - off you go.” Getting in the cab the first job was to work out how to set the radio to Radio 2; Second, Gearbox; Third, Interior light. Then find a gear that moves it and creep quietly out of the yard.

I don’t know what it was called but the Eaton box in my '02 Foden was a 6 over 3. It was a standard H layout with 3 position switch to the side on the top of the knob working forwards/backwards. The gears were 1,5,6 2,7,8 3,9,10 and 4,11,12. It was a lovely box when you got to know it.

as some of you guys may know i start back tramping monday morning at nuttalls so had to go in this morning to run through a few things and go out for a short drive with the guy who runs the workshop well this is were it all went wrong it was a scania topline with a 3 over 3 manual box having driven many scanias before i have never driven a manual in fact i have only ever driven a manual truck 3 times and 1 was for my test
well it was shocking a just couldnt find 4th i was all over the place ( stiring soup i think the phrase is )

I fail to see how anyone can muck up a gear change on the scania…just follow the little guide…unless of course, was it missing?

Then YOU ASK!!!

when i first got in a told the bloke you gonna have to bear with my i never driven one of these in manual before and he was great
i did look at the guide on top of the stick i wasnt rocket sience i just couldnt find forth  however when we swapped over so he could give a demo he did say it was a bit sloppy going into forth and said he just knows how they all drive as he repairs them and drives them all the time
i dont mind manuals i do feel im actually proper driving with a manual but only ever driven a daf 4 over 4 and i do like that box :open_mouth:

That looks a very easy layout to use because for most of the driving the stick would remain in the right plane. Easy peasy. (3 high split to 5 low split forget 4th )

So what did you do your training in,an auto?

cliffton 27:
he did say it was a bit sloppy going into forth

We have some 54 plate 3/3 Scania’s that came from our southern TSP’s (we get all the ■■■■■■ :frowning:
All the ones we have were a “LOT sloppy” when they first came back from the south. They are better now our VMU has fixed them.

You should try missing out 4th 'til it’s warmed up a bit

ShropsBri:

If you read what he says he did it in a manual but only driven 2 since & not a Scania

Hiya…foden 12 speed could make you embarased if you was unlucky… the normal gearchange
was L1…L2…L3…forget L4 and go to direct 1 then overdrive1 direct2 overdrive2 and so on through
3 and 4 makeing 12… years ago i had to give up my ERF ■■■■■■■ 205 to a chap who could’nt drive
a foden box it was only for a week… this chap said whats so special so i said jump in ill show you how
they work… well it was only the unit so i went L3 into D1 to o/d 1 but there was a huge crunch between
L3 and D1 caursing this chap to burst into laughter and saying i thought you could drive these…
wait a moment watch this so i drove L1…L2…L3…L4 then into Direct2 and into Overdrive2…
this is the way the previous driver had used the gearbox… it was important to know but he was’nt around
to ask…both ways was ok it was just what the driver prefered. with a two stroke engine you needed to
use more gears to keep the revs above 2200 or the engine would just die on you. They are another story…
not many newer drivers would manage to drive a 12 speed foden twostroke because the style of driving is
oppersite what they teach you nowadays, plus in the 60,s most fodens was 65mph plus going up to 80 mph
limiters just would’nt work as the engine needed to be working hard all the time.
John

Did you say ‘2 stroke engine’?

ShropsBri:
Did you say ‘2 stroke engine’?

Yes he did, you really had to drive them else once the revs dropped you were in the ■■■■. The 12 speed box was developed for that reason, but was also fitted to the Foden trucks powered by other engines ie Gardner, Leyland 680, ■■■■■■■ and R/Royce.

i know after my first full day in it il have it down to a fine art but just couldnt belive how much a struggled with it
also i dont it left the bossman with a massive deal of confidence in my ability o well gonna be fun on monday so if see a 54 plate slightly shabby looking topline reving its nuts off and crawling along give us a wave it will be me

weve got 4/4 manuals and i prefer them to our autos, had 3/3 in about year ago, most hated it,i loved it,pick the right gear 99% of the time, that said id had them for years previously inm other jobs so it was like going back to a old mate, just give it time and youll not even think about it,youll just do it automatically

clifton 27 I use a 3 over 3 with a splitter and you will get used to it in no time

Also don’t forget that when you are parked up - move the gear stick over to the right and then lift the collar at the bottom of the gear knob. This will allow you to lay the gear stick flat on the floor which makes it easier moving around the cab

My Eaton 12 speed was in an '02 Foden with a CAT 345 motor. good old girl but she was getting a bit loose and would fall out of a couple of gears.

kr79:
I used to drive an MAN a 35 343 5 pot had a 16 speed knock across box but was back to front so first and second was nearest to you and you worked away from yourself. Ok when you was used to it but ever drive a normal one and you looked a right knob.
Anyone who has driven a gate change scammel will tell you we all don’t know we are born and a twin splitter is for sissys

■■■■ yeah ! I had a run in an eight wheeler with gate change. It was out of the ark in the 60’s, christ knows when it was built. Anyway, it was alright once you got used to it, but miss a gear going up hill, and you just had to stop and start again :unamused:
As for the Scania 3 over 3. The one I had had a dodgy second / fifth. Cold or hot, the ■■■■■■■ thing snicked every time no matter whether I doubled it, did it quick or slow. :imp: Another thing was the range change. Once you’d got away first thing, you could shift from low to high, but it wouldn’t go back down until it had done about 20 miles. 3 over 3’s a piece of cake but I’d sooner have a decent box.

The DAF CF we have is a 4 split… Basically only a 4 speed box (Seriously why would you need 12, 16 ect unless your in heavy haulage■■?) But is easy enough to manage. Best is when unloaded, set off in low 2nd, straight into 4th then high 1st, 2nd ect… Possibly now what the maker would recommend, but never feels down on power while doing it

It happensbud. I lamd autos and opti cruise bug youll get it
