So I’m in the pub last night when my mate (who’s also a lorry driver) came in. We’re chatting away when he hands me a piece of paper.
What he’s given me is a note from the night-shift driver, which he found balanced on the steering wheel when he got into work the other day:-
… and I quote…
“Can you make sure you rolls up straps correctly as when you fold them in half first means I have to unroll every strap before I use them as they are too short to go over the load. Thanks”
What would more annoy me is the idiots that roll them up with the hook on the inside so that when you throw it the hook could hit some one or some thing that you cant see on the other side of truck
TheUncaringCowboy:
Why would you fold a strap in half before rolling it up?
More to the point… why wouldn’t you?
Because it serves no purpose what so ever. Just roll the thing up normally. I have never heard of anyone doing this, probably because it’s a stupid thing to do.

Then they come away with stupid statements like its the only way to throw it when it’s windy. Weak armed idiots.
Lets face it; any rolling up is better than finding a tangle of straps shoved in the locker. Folding long straps makes it much quicker (twice as fast) to roll them.
Always take the strap completely out of the ratchet.
Roll the strap with the hook on the outside. If you have a lot of straps, use something like this. roadking.co.uk/automotive-t … -base.html
Replace any frayed, contaminated or knotted straps without delay.

So when some poor sod gets hit in the head it’s “they shouldn’t have been there !”
Folding the strap in half before rolling it up just seems really strange to me. How do you know that the next time you have to throw it, you’ll have enough clearance for it to unwrap properly?
I’m fussy, so I do all of mine using a strap winder and coil them inside-out too, so that the hook naturally faces the trailer when you come to throw it.
What would really annoy me on my only clear night off in the week would be somebody bleating about work stuff rather than pointing out the magnificent norks on the barmaid.

You say why wouldn’t you? Please go ahead and explain your logic as to why you would fold it in half first rather than just rolling it up…

As already said folding it in half means there is only half the length to roll up.
Personally I fold about a third of the length back, it saves a little time in the rolling, but doesnt hamper the unrolling after its thrown over the load. Probably easier to throw the heavier hook over too, but for safety I keep the hook in my hand when tossing!

So… is it me and my mate being think, or what?
Yeah it is. If you’ve got a high load and throw a strap folded in half before being wound up over it it’ll just end up sitting there on the top because its unravelled itself by the time it has got there and there’s no lump of strap left to carry it over. People who fold straps in half then roll them up deserve to be hung by their ballsack from the nearest street lamp.
If you do it because it makes it easier to roll them up then go spend £15 on a strap winder and use one of those instead of doing it by hand.

Midnight Rambler:
Whats realy annoying is when someone rolls the strap around the ratchet itself
What really winds me up is the amount of ratchet straps with hooks on that “fall off lorries” it shouldn’t be that hard not to be a ‘cook’ and not lose it.
