Rant!

Its no wonder we’re looked down upon, treated like scum and paid no better or less than an un-skilled factory worker. Look at your typical driver in an RDC, MSA wherever and its morbidly obese , smells of body odour, has food spilt down the front of yesterdays t-shirt and all in all very scruffy and un-professional looking!

I know not all drivers are like this but most are, so if this is you for ■■■■ sake sort it out, your an embrassment to yourself and the industry!

Sent from the bed of my lorry on my laptop waiting to get tipped near sheffield.

totaly agree with you,we have some drivers like that and when you say to owt to them about it they say i live in my truck all week like that is a good reason for been a dirty sod.
even if parked in a lay by i have to clean my teeth before i go anywhere bad breath is one of my pet hates.
at the end of the day some folk just have no respect for them selfs

A common view, but is it true?
Are MOST drivers the slobs described above or is that just an age old image.
Most drivers I see nowadays wear either a company uniform or standard workwear.

we provide all the uniform but some lads seem to get it and rub it on the fifth wheel before they put it on,how they get grease all over em like they do is unreal and they dont even attempt to clean them selfs up,

Which is why the public have such a high regard for the professional looking Eddie Stobart drivers. Lets face it, it wasn’t that long ago they were wearing ties!

Yep it’s I’d say it’s true with a few exceptions…

Or at least that is how drivers are perceived by the public…so whether it’s true or not is irrelevant. It’s the perception that they are that gets you treated like a turd…

Some drivers deserve it too…f-ing and blinding and generally confirming what a bunch of louts they are. Not all of course, but plenty are…

Stobbies look smart but if the public knew what they get paid…

No isn’t true that Lorry driver do like that, but its true that too many of every Profession do that Way.And,as you find funny People in Management,Warehouse on a Forklift or any other Places who find everything Crap, dont understand what you say and everyone abuse so will you also find Drvers with such attitude.
Has also with Companies to do who give that People that feeling as if they were God against other,as one of them is the recording your Call,or Image, you may get charged for abuse of staff as that Staff can do as they like.
But thats not them who have Food on there Shirt. That with the Food on the Shirt are mostly fat People where the Coffe cant drop down to the Floor as the Belly is too big.
In that Case i call it a General Habit of that Century.

So true, and continue to keep said filthy uniform on all week without a change. :frowning: :frowning:
Majority of drivers at our place keep themselves decent, but there’s a few who wouldn’t be safe near a naked flame.

It all boils down to personal hygene I think, there is not really an excuse for looking like a slob these days, if you know you are going to be out for even one night you could take at least a clean shirt and at the very least a pack of wet wipes plus deodorant. Most of us have portable razors as well - okay it’s not a shower or a bath but at least you are clean(ish). We all have wash bags that we carry about with us but some just don’t use the contents and prefer to live like they do - what are their homes like? I wouldn’t go to bed unless I had a shower or bath so why sleep in the truck without being clean?

.

All some of them need to finish the image is a can of white cider in hand, a scruffy dog with rope lead and an armful of this month’s big issue.

Roll up looking like that and you will be treated like a leper.

I know some of the ones your on about.Think we are on for same company.ND Bellshill?

Aside from a matter of personal hygiene and the food stains (seriously, who the hell still spills food down themselves as an adult?) I think most of the gripes on here are simply personal bias and have no bearing on if a person can do the job or not.

Overweight? Of course, they are the last safe target of discrimination alongside smokers so I’m not surprised to see it brought up in a negative way. ■■■■ I’m rather overweight myself, does it make me a bad person? Does it stop me being able to do what’s asked of me? No, so in that case it’s purely an aesthetic thing.

Tattoos? Again, surely personal choice. I don’t have any yet but I do love them and plan to get a fair few. Not your generic tribals, if enough care and effort are put in to them, tattoos can be as much an expression of yourself as they are art. The same could be said for piercings and again I ask, do either of these stop you being able to drive a truck, swap trailers, open curtains, sheet a load or anything else that may be required? Of course not.

At the end of the day, not every guy fits into the football watching, lager drinking, short back and sides/number 2 all over cookie cutter socially acceptable standard. Ok most do, the majority of drivers I either pass or pass me look the same. At least middle aged, short trimmed hair, clean shaven, normal. Not everyone can be that guy. The best I have seen is a guy with a spiky red mohawk, a goatee and tattoos fly past me on the M1. I thought, “that guy looks awesome!”.

Want to know why the public probably really dislike us compared to our looks? We drive big ■■■■ off vehicles which get in their way, slow them down on single track roads, hold them up whilst we reverse off the main road into a side street or whilst doing a tight corner. We do a job that you don’t even need GCSEs for. You could have a bloody doctorate but the guy in the office with his A-Levels will just see you as another uneducated person who couldn’t get a proper job. We don’t come across as the friendliest bunch, we all seem to secretly or not so secretly hate each other as well as the public. I’d imagine most of us are solitary by nature, hence we happily do a job that has a fair amount of alone time and that rubs off in our interactions with other people. Not to mention the connection of truck driving to several high profile murder investigations over the years. I think personal looks have very little to do with it compared to the publics ideas about the job and lifestyle.
