Trucks are limited to 56mph because this is the legal limit. I would assume that if the road limit if increased then the speed limiter can be upped also. But I may be wrong, ive been wrong once before
May I suggest you buy a copy of the highway code? Trucks are limited to 56MPH not because thatās the speed limit in the UK but that 90KPH is what an EU directive says they have to be set to.
Slighty off topic, should we push for it to be put back up to 60 mph if we ever get out of europe, that would really push productivity up!

Yes, but, only for those that were actually driving HGVs when we were originally limited to 60 or before
Anyway, the 60 limiter didnāt last long, worse luck, but, when did it first come out ? was it 88/89 ? to 94 iirc

92 ish, but required on all registered after august 87 I think,(sad when the 143 450 had one fitted, lol) any thing registered before that were and still exempt iirc.
I cant see what all the fuss is about raising s/c limits, i very much doubt it will get the job done faster, it will just get you to the next Q of traffic quicker!
Coffeeholic:
So, whatās the word from your bosses regarding a wage increase to go along with this? I mean youāll be able to get more work done so the wages should go up. If you worked in a factory where you were paid to produce 40 items per hour would you produce 50 for the same money?
People being happy about this seems a bit like turkeys excited about Christmas.
So by this you agree that the Government are correct when they say it will make a difference to haulage industry productivity ?

So can we assume that due to this ruling coming in limiters will be upped and 2 fingers given to the european beurocrats who seem to want to drag this country down here is in hope that they sort it out eh
No, as far as Iām aware thereās no proposal to change the EU speed limiter regulations.
Ahh Europe wins again grrrrr ahh well 56 it is then or 52 dependant on who you work for.
truckman020:
would love to know why it takes them so long, running this country must be difficult but surely all they need to do is decide, have a discussion, sign some paperwork and get it started,if I remember I heard about this around three months ago[maybe longer]so why should it take from then to april next year,on a good note though at least the police wont be able to hide in bushes with their little guns hoping to zap you for doing over 40mph
BE AWARE, from now till the 6th of April, the police PURGE to get more tickets issued before hand! nasty killer juggernaut drivers, THINK OF THE CHILDREN wonder when theyāre going to up the limit for cars/ motorists to 80 mph on the motorway? since 1967 weāve had to stick to 70 mph! Lol
funny thing is I was thinking about that while replying, lol,
I cant see what all the fuss is about raising s/c limits, i very much doubt it will get the job done faster, it will just get you to the next Q of traffic quicker
Nor can i, the amount of traffic about at the moment is ridiculous.
personally i go at what speed i consider safe in my opinion to do so. if i,m over the limit and get caught then its my look out.
I was always under the impression that 56mph was for fuel economy, I was a bit disappointed when my Daf LF 7.5t was renewed in 2008 and the new model was limited to 56, did enjoy doing 70 in lane 3.The latest models are limited to 50
For proper drivers that by nature drive to the conditions of the road on the day⦠ideal.
For the f/Whits that think they are drivers, that will automatically look at it as a target on ANY A road, whatever the conditions on whatever day, also ideal (for them) being as they are as thick as pig ā ā ā ā anyway⦠but not so ideal for the rest of us on the road.
I would have preferred to have it left as it is now for this reason.
Javiatrix:
Lurvley, means Iām much less likely to get a ticket running on the limiter on a single carriageway
I wouldnāt bet on that !
Iām sure Iāve read somewhere that they will enforce the speed limits rigorously, so anything over 50/80kms might mean a Big Smack on the Arse.
The final police purge seems correct around here. Thereās a camera van on the Oxford-Banbury road almost every day now near Shipton Quarry. Going towards Banbury about 500 yards from the Bunkers Hill turn. I think I upset him the other day, I pulled into the same layby, probably obscuring his view (I was down to my last few minutes anyway) and he drove off almost instantly. They also hang around the B430 approaching Ardley Quarry, must be to nab all the tippers in the area.

Reckon my argument has just been proved
Yeh too right mate, keep it wound up, itās win win, your boss can now set your schedules to 56mph instead of 40. In theory you can cover another 14miles for all of your 9/10 hours driving, think how his revenue will increase as will your workload with extra drops and time, and his saving on nights out as you will get back to the yard now more often, . I am confident he will be working out how he can share this extra cash with you at this very moment.
Is it just me or what??
good news for me! i will be able to trundle up the A46 Lincoln to Grimsby, and back,at 50 rather than crawl there at 40 much less of a rolling roadblock hopefully

Until you meet a few of the hi viz safety heroās, some on this thread, who will remain glued to the current limits
Be interesting to see what the supermarket companies do, stick or twist
for the Vikings that post,( I think we should get more wages for driving faster when the limit is raised)ā¦then did you campaign to have your wages reduced when the limits were applied some years ago? ā¦somehow I think not.
no owner driver /operator is liley to be crusading for that one?
watch how plod on the A 75 will have a purge leading up to that date, and then no doubt enforce their own zero tolerance above 50 thereafterā¦the other poster is right though when driving in England, the faster you drive, just means the quicker you arrive at the next gridlock /roadworks etcā¦I came off the ferry tues morning, tipped in Reigate then sheffield, and ended up coming across from cairnryan on the tues night, apart from average speed roadworks, gridlock traffic, variable speed cameras, mobile roadworks with convoy cars, M 1 closed at j21 etc ,then I donāt think I drove for a 20 mile clear stretch of motorway.it took me to get to penrith before all that was behind me,just nice timing to run the A 75 gauntlet again. what a completely bolloxed road network England hasā¦getting told your coming back Cherbourg/rosslaire has to be the best news ever for the paddys coming homeā¦

Donāt know if you include me in that mate, being as I said it should be left as it is because I also suggested that I would drive to conditions on the day, and not from 50 to the limiter just ābecause I canā , as has been voiced on by some of the hard of thinking on here
On second thoughts you could not mean me, I could never be described as a hi viz safety hero, I was busting speed limits and flounting regs second nature in the 80s, when you actually HAD to as an o/d, and when you DID actually get suitably rewarded for it, not as today as a complete mug/knobhead where you DONāT

Trunking as a night driver I am mostly foot to the floor where safe to do so, when I have been unlucky enough to be on Store deliveries I am smack on the limit, it is absolutely no point rushing around on that job, I know pretty much every other driver with more than a couple of brain cells to spare generally runs those jobs in a similar manner from what I have seen over the years, nobody is in a rush when playing trolly dolly for the night

I wonder if they will have adjusted the camera by the showground.
