Nowadays rowing racing boats as used by Olympic oarsmen and the University Boat race are moved around the country on specially made trailers towed by minibus or 4x4, but it wasn’t always this way.
Back in the 1960s and earlier, sectionalised boats were not the norm, so boats had to be carried in one piece. From March to October, particularly in the Thames valley area, but also around the country, fields close to the riverbank at weekends would be home to quite a few wagons with special bolster frames for carrying these boats. There would also be the odd ancient single deck coach with a boat rack on top too.
There still is a dispensation from full abnormal load regulations under C&U for these boats, but driving a Thames Trader or a TK with six 60 foot boats on must have been quite a challenge. There were some London area firms that specialised in this unique area of haulage.
Did anyone on here ever get involved in this activity? or has anyone any pictures of the vehicles involved?
