They clearly can’t get drivers.
Why don’t these employers understand that if you pay poor wages and force people to work 13/14/15 hours then sleep in a tin can every night then you’re not going to a; attract drivers or b; keep them. How you could ever achieve £34,500 on such low rates is beyond me.

Even using the o/t rate of £8.50 you’d need to do an average of 78hrs every week to get 34.5k

That will be including night out money I would think, which shouldn’t count towards salary.

I could say my salary is £6k per year more than what it is when I include my night out money. But when it comes to applying for mortgages or any finance product you can’t declare that as part of your salary because it’s not. It’s tax free allowances which show on your wage slip as such, which the banks check.

It’s a difficult one to comment on really. Now I have some experience under my belt, I would rather ratchet strap my knob to a cactus than work for those wages, but on the other hand newbies for example NEED experience and it’s often the penny pinching firms that provide a way in to LGV driving.

However a firm that advertises cack wages and also requires a minimum of 12 months experience is taking the ■■■■. And drivers who work for those wages [zb] the job up for the rest of us. Then there are EE drivers who are quite happy to work for £8 per hour to add into the equation.

Then there is a point that Peterm made on a thread; He would rather work for crap wages than be on the dole. I would too, so it would seem that low wages are going to be here to stay unfortunately. Luckily for me my financial situation isn’t too drastic so I would NEVER drive a wagon for less than £9 per hour today.

Maybe this ’ Living wage ’ malarkey may end up being a good thing, although by the time it gets to £9, I am sure the rise in living/inflation will still mean it’s a crap wage.
