R Hanson and Son Wakefield

38 acres in total if i remember rightly - with both the top and bottom yards

After Sanmar / Silver Birch packed up it was taken over by CSH (Container Sales & Hire) and used as a storage and repair depot for site boxes

Cracking site for a transport outfit - slap bang in the middle of a country park

Danny,

Is this one of any use? Was’nt sure if this Hanson from Chapel en le Frith was the same as the Wakefield Hansons. Pic was taken in 1978 in Toddy services by Peter Davies.

Lemonmouth

yes thats the same hanson.

In my huge collection of old truck photos ive found a few of Hansons. One of which is a brand new SA 400 8x4 tanker reg no XWJ 976T, It looks like its not even done its first load yet!! I will try and post them soon, also have pics of old Atkis & ERF B series.

Cheers Lemonmouth any pics are of interest to him

MarkR the other ones he is wanting pics of are the Green tippers that were running out of Flocton, There was also a hansons of Huddersfield that were as already mentioned a different firm

Thanks for the help

Danny

There’s a photo of an 8 wheeler B series, UWU 630R, on Ebay right now Danny, got about 3 days left.

If this is the same Hansons I remember in the late 70,s they used to run Green Atki Defenders and Borderers and had 1 or 2 Right ■■■■■■ day cab bonneted Macks on tipper work coal and I think scrap and one of the Macks was called “Midnight Zulu” (which is still running round to shows now painted Blue & White) and the rub is the lad who drove “Midnight Zulu” was a coloured lad from Huddersfield (I think) and was a right character and a brilliant lad to have a night out with and a great sense of humour , I often wonder what happened to him as he must be about the same age as me now (a golden oldie) thats all I am saying :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

This particular Mack was in Heritage Commercials last year as they did an article on it.

if i remember rightly the macks belonged to a guy in barnsley forgot his name but he used to run a few macks.also henderson’s from havercroft (wakefield) used to run macks on tanker work.the guy in barnsley used to name all his trucks midnight (something) hanson’s never had any macks.

Hi mate just remembered you have jogged the brain cells (whats left of them) the Mack “Midnight Zulu” and the other one belonged to “R J Normans” from Barnsley and were if I remember orange and green in colour   :unamused: :unamused:

The coloured lad who drove the Mack did at one time work for Hansons “the green ones” I think from Huddersfield or it may have been Flockton as that name seems to ring a bell as I am sure you can,t use that road any more as there is a 7.5t weight restriction on it now :exclamation:   :unamused: :unamused: :exclamation:

Hansons from Flockton used to do a lot of coal and a bit of grain as backloads out of Seaforth grain terminal at liverpool.

They had a smart fleet of Borderers and Defenders with the superb “■■■■■■■ 220,s” and the brilliant “Fullers” 10 speed box and they were flying machines as the story goes they had a fitter on nights just keeping the ■■■■■■■ engines tweeked for fuel economy and pulling well as they used to go like the proverbial off the shovel and I don,t remember them having anything else such as ERF,s or Fodens :unamused: :unamused:

thats him bob norman he emigrated to america, hansons used to do all the coal haulage even though hargreaves bought him out we still do a bit for hargreaves like sand out of oakamoor on hansons account.

Found this one in my archives - will it do ?

yes bonkey thats the same hanson.he aquired the tankers side when he bought out sam longson from chapel-on-le-frith.

A few more where that came from !

The Atkis came in when Hansons took over, this old girl was a Longson original that just needed a bit of a livery change.

When Jack Hanson off loaded them in the early '80s they reverted back to being Sam Longson again and ran ERF’s, there are loads of pictures of the tankers, many in Hanson livery but very few of the green 'uns.

Found another one. This time from the fleet at Wakefield !

just for the record hansons also owned nmi (northumbrian metal industries) at hoyland barnsley, they used to build body’s mainly tippers.

I vaguely remember NMI building insulated bodies for the carriage of tarmac for Thomas W Ward roadstone lorries. They had a few based at Eldon Hill and Shining bank Quarries. This was before RMC bought the company out.

Limey:

As a bit of an aside, when Longsons got these ERFs they were owned by E & J Meeks - anyone remember them ? They got bought out by some investment fund. Longsons are now part of AK Transport from Ashbourne, but I think Meeks may well have disappeared with so many other bulk hauliers.

p.s. Where can I find more piccies of those Longson motors ?

E & J Meeks? were they the ones on the Tele when the Miners Strike was on back in the 70’s? I seem to remember their motors from that period

Unsure where you can find more pics of the Longson vehicles,I’ve got a small collection that I’ve bought from shows and have got from Ebay.
