Quit a job without notice?

Daveyandbev:
Be thinking of phoning in sick, then put notie in over weekend as you can use self certification for first week of illness. Not fairest thing to do but it’s not walking away leaving bad feeling. Like what’s already been said you have a verbal contract. Either way good luck and think of how you’d feel if they’d done it to you with only a couple of hours notice.

Nope can’t sign yourself and work. If he had a bump the insurance would be invalid

Im pleased ive stayed on feel alot better for it, i do have a suspition this new firm are just thinking of themselves as some have said they have maybe been dropped in it, Never heard anything from them this morning by the way i was exspecting a phone call at least…

by the way some saying if i did id loose my week in hand etc i work 4 on 4 off 2 nights out so it falls some weeks where my first shift back is on pay day from the last week so i wouldnt of lost my week in hand but as i say im pleased ive done things the right way,

I earn 23k on this 4 on 4 off that day job was 27k home every night but its not about the money in some cases work references matter more,

cheers to all for the advice folks made me think first. :bulb:

I think you probably feel better in yourself for doing the right thing.

Unless someone was unemployed, I’d be expecting to wait a week at least for them to start. If a company wants you to start there and then, it sounds like they aren’t very organised.

Possession is still 9/10ths of the law though - let us not forget.

If you’re going to quit suddenly, then not only do you need to have the next job lined up, but ideally you’ve just been paid as well, and are owed nothing in hand…

On what grounds??

No one can force you to work notice. Just hand it in with immediate effect and leave.

For the sake of a weeks notice you are burning that bridge by dropping a company that gave you a chance as a newby right in the stinky stuff.

Whether they treat you well enough, in your opinion, is not the thing here, they gave a you a job when you needed it.

The new company presumably are aware that you will have to drop your present employer in the mire?, presumably they are happy with this, and presumably they realise you are equally disloyal and the only person you care about is number one, so don’t be surprised if they only really need someone till the end of the month and do the same to you come Christmas Eve.
Then where will you be, a newish driver with only one referee they can’t use going into the January downturn.

You do what you want, but trust me a good reputation in this industry opens, and keeps opening, doors that are usually closed, a poor rep does the opposite.

Good post.

I started a job 2 months ago and it was in black and white that in the 3 month probationary period it’s a days notice from either parties

As people say though I wouldn’t burn my bridges ,you never know if you want to go back

23 k class 1 nier london ? Boy you being mugged.

I was under impression 30k is a minimum wage nier London. and u get to go home every night.

I turned down offer 120-140 per day plant hire in sutton. Mix of class 1 and 2.

Clearly im a strange one judging by some of the replies, when I first passed my class 1 an agency had me in work straight away Mon-Fri. It wasn’t the best paying or start times but I was working. Three months later I was offered a full time job where I am now, they said I could start straight away, this was a Thursday afternoon and I was due to start 2am at DHL that night, so I did something crazy.

I said to the new employer to wait a week which they were fine with, told the agency the next week would be my last (Gives them a chance to find another weirdo to start at 2am  ) and job done.

I know if it didn’t work out where I am now I could go straight back to the agency and actually be offered work. That was 2.5yrs ago so I have not needed them yet but who knows in the future.

I stupidly did the same, gave a weeks notice to the agency, they never gave me another shift…they behaved as expected, dishonourably, and it gave me the week off i wanted before starting where i am now, but had i been needed i would have worked right up till the Friday before.
Their childishness bore fruit for them, and me however, the witheld my holiday pay so i witheld the tacho cards from the last month which they needed for proof of work to get their money, when i got my back pay they got their tacho cards.
I take great pleasure in reminding about this every time they contacted me to ask me back.

They, and the previous lot who went bust owing me holiday pay…which the Receiver recovered for me…taught me all i need to know about agencies, if they all went out of business tomorrow and their trophy wives ■■■■■■ off with their personal ‘trainers’ i’d laugh my knob off.

Be carefull a decent employer would not expect you do just drop someone in it it actually says a lot about the new company

They can’t force you to work it but the law is on their side and they can recover costs of you not working it such as the costs of employing agency staff for the duration of the notice period. They used to say on a Moneysavingexpert.com forum I was on just to leave and there would be no ramifications so this woman left without working her notice and a couple of months later posted asking for help because her former employer was suing the crap out of her for the losses.

Have you heard back from the one who offered you the new job yet, if not I bet they were just using you to get over Xmas as cheaper than a agency.

While they can it’s got to be pretty rare a company would be so sad to do it unless it’s cost them thousands.

Op just hand ya notice in with a weekly sick note. My mate did that with a 4 week sicknote. Nothing company could do.

Jack it in & start the better one. They’re not gonna bother with court.

I get what some people are saying re just don’t go in and look after number one but if an employer had said to any of you “oh by the way, don’t bother coming in tomorrow. You’re being made redundant” then they’d get pelters for it. These things work both ways
