Quit a job without notice?

If this new company can’t respect the fact it’s unfair to drop another firm init’ then I think it says a lot about them… Just saying!!

Oral doesn’t matter. When it comes to employment, in the absence of any contract then statutory terms are in force. When it comes to statutory notice the law is the employee must give one weeks notice if employed more than a month but for less than two years. After two years it is two weeks statutory notice.

That’s the other thing. It can’t look good to the new lot,if you’ve dumped on the last one to get there :open_mouth:

Thanks for the advice lets just say i understand that an employer has a “duty of care” for there employees this company did not provide me with safety boots, gloves, hi viz, only a basic uniform and i swear to this day its someones handy downs,

You dont feel as though you matter to the firm when you call and say “ive just tipped at blah blah” you often get “whos this” “er Adam the driver” “WHO”

I feel bad for it but im looking after number 1

Sounds like your just a bum on seat to them FFs

Bum on a seat seems to be the rule and not the exception nowadays. The bigger the company, the more likely you’ll ring up and they say “who are you?”. :unamused:

For the sake of a weeks notice you are burning that bridge by dropping a company that gave you a chance as a newby right in the stinky stuff.

Whether they treat you well enough, in your opinion, is not the thing here, they gave a you a job when you needed it.

The new company presumably are aware that you will have to drop your present employer in the mire?, presumably they are happy with this, and presumably they realise you are equally disloyal and the only person you care about is number one, so don’t be surprised if they only really need someone till the end of the month and do the same to you come Christmas Eve.
Then where will you be, a newish driver with only one referee they can’t use going into the January downturn.

You do what you want, but trust me a good reputation in this industry opens, and keeps opening, doors that are usually closed, a poor rep does the opposite.

+1 juddian… Plus he could and possibly will lose his week in hand wages in leu of notice.

No, They could theoretically pursue him for their losses but they couldn’t legally withhold wages for work he had already done. Personally though, for all sorts of reasons my personal view is that he should work out his notice, not least for the reasons Juddlian gave, i.e. the new firm will know from the get-go that he would be prepared to dump on them just as easily.

Be thinking of phoning in sick, then put notie in over weekend as you can use self certification for first week of illness. Not fairest thing to do but it’s not walking away leaving bad feeling. Like what’s already been said you have a verbal contract. Either way good luck and think of how you’d feel if they’d done it to you with only a couple of hours notice.

I think quitting overnight with zero notice is taking the pee. Difference to me would be If they are running illegal equipment or trying to get you to break the law. If you just don’t like them at least do your week notice.

I have quit but that was after a day of an owner swearing at me, completely losing his temper, trying to force me to break hours using pressure and I snapped as anyone would, told him calmly I’ll not be spoken to like that, ill be coming back and expect to see him to discuss this whilst I hand the keys back. I was down south on nights out. Instead of keys in field type thing (not my style) I drove back, even dropped flat trailer back to farm went back into office to face him (I wanted my piece). No where to be seen so off I went.

Had a change of heard ended up coming in to work i let things play on my mind too much wouldnt be able to sleep tonight knowing id dropped a company than gave me a chance as my 1st class1 job in the crap,

left a voicemail on the new jobs phone explaining that i wont be able to start untill most likely after xmas now gonna see what the outcome of that is before i work my notice, only fair.

Alarm bells ringing for me. Any firm that interviews someone today and wants them to drop someone else in it overnight will undoubtedly treat you with as much contempt should the need arise.

I think that’s the right decision.

thats the job.pus the fact they ddnt emloy you months ago means that someone has dropped ut and left them in the dung…if the job was that good, who would in it 2 weeks before xmas…they called you because someone done to them, what your thinking about doing to your own boss…if they havent been shafting you or if you dont have any greivance with them.the new lot should be expected to respect your integrity and let ou hand in your notce…there nly asking you after this long because someone just stuffed them.

+1…watch and see if the jobs still there after xmas and if there still desperate for to employ you then.

What a load of crap replys not a bit of common sense between them
Just don’t turn up start the new job and when he rings you just say your not well and don’t know when you will be better
You are only a couple of weeks there so reference down the road won’t matter
Look after number one

And another +1, said everything I was going to say.

They may not be the greatest, but it was a start and personally, when I do a deal with someone, customer or employee, then I stand by it. In your case the deal is a weeks notice. I’d be surprised if the 'oral’contract didn’t have a clause you find you’ve forgotten about and various loss of earnings would suddenly equal roughly your last week’s pay.

Secondly I wouldn’t want a driver who’d ditch his current firm. Surprised they do. Unless this urgent job is urgent until January and then they find they have no work for you.

I don’t believe in all that karma rubbish, but I do think in work you reap what you sow.

Your call though.

You’ve done the right thing. When I left the company that gave me my first class 2 start I gave them a weeks notice. Even though we were all fed up with being run ragged and I wanted to go there and then. I also told them if they got stuck for a Saturday driver to give me a ring. I do Saturdays for them cos the work is OK. We just didn’t want it 65+ hours a week. I was at pains to leave on good terms, mainly cos they gave me a start.
Most industries are quite incestuous. If you’re fantastic everyone knows about it,and it works both ways

Nope can’t sign yourself and work. If he had a bump the insurance would be invalid
