Quick container query

I know next to nothing about container ops, so why would a container be carried with doors to the front like this?

maybe he’s just taking it somewhere to have it lifted off

could be a number of reasons …

Just a straight forward lift on lift off
security
used to see them ramped to tip that way due to lack of yard space .
back it up to a wall etc open doors and move a floating ramp in front to tip…
one of the regs will be in to shed light on it

One of the jobs where the container is loaded like this one s scrap metal. Box is lifted off and loaded with the box vertically Box is then lifted back onto the trailer.

Some times loaded like that if carpets on,then when you j/knife the unit they can be tipped from both ends by a pole truck at ground level.

dave, don’t want to state the obvious here, BUT, there is only one set of doors, so they can’t tip at both ends

as madmackem said, some scrap yards lift the box off and stand it on its end to load it

i have done this many times

Make no mistake it do happen :grimacing:

I’ve seen them put on back to front by mistake  . Used to see twin box non sliding trailers yonks ago with doors set either end. Maybe just ferrying it between places.

Jackknifing is no benfit as the box only slides rearwards so the box will still be halfway down the trailer if unit cranked over and doors to front open.

I had it on my first week, I didn’t realise till I left and asked the question. Had to go back and get it turned round, haven’t had them try it since.

It’s most likely just a lift on / lift off.

All makes sense, thanks everyone. I thought a mistake was unlikely, but couldn’t think what other reason there would be.

Ta, Gary

Used to take them to Michelin at Stoke like that.
Back under a fixed gantry then they lift it you pull out of the way they drop it on the ground and a forklift runs up a small ramp to tip it. Sounds long winded but it was actually about a twenty minute tip!

Quite often it was done to carry 2 20ft’s, as you could jack-knife the unit and then unload from both ends of the trailer at the same time.

The polar opposite was my grandad working on Booze in the 70s, they’d load 2 containers doors inwards then get them swapped once near destination.

l did this this week with two 20s both loaded, the doors on the front one to the front, it was a lift off so it didn’t matter. When picking up two empty 20s I always get them with the doors facing front and back, that way you can check them before leaving the container yard.
