Remember - legally, your passengers can’t pay you, even just to cover the costs. You have to pay for it all yourself.
Of course, unofficially, they can give you money, but I suggest that you tell them that if anyone asks, you’re paying for it, and they wait until the day after before giving you any money (so there’s no proof or paper trail if there were to be an accident or you got stopped by VOSA or something).
