On the unit that’s pulling a petrol tanker, there’s a box or something fitted to the back of the unit just above the cat walk and this always has a green light illuminated. What is it?
Electrical cutoff light. The electrics have to be switched off when discharging and the light being out shows they have been.
Thanks
Yeah quite correct although these were not fitted (green light) when I drove them in the 80’s.Just switched master swithch off. Elf and safety hardly existed then. Scary looking back.

partly right, but is mainly to do with the earth return system on any vehicle that carries flammable liquids. if it fails the light will show red.

So I take it if the driver pulls up and it’s red then no fuel is being discharged and it’s back to the depot?
to be honest with you its a bit of a minefield. the tankers unlike other trucks are not earthed to the chassis every individual earth comes back to a central buzz bar.
you also have (or did when I was on them) two green lights in the cab to indicate the earth integrity. now in 9 yrs I didn’t have a problem. unless you wanted a early finish and swopped a good bulb for a blown one and vor’d the motor.
to answer your question in theory you could still drop the load as the power would be off… but if it was a vapour recovery site then you couldn’t power up and return till rectified…
You will notice the cab top lights on pet reg vehicle are green too, they show the terminal manager which driver to use the Vaseline on [emoji12]

I pulled out of the esso terminal in brum for a couple of years and when it was top loading you had to wear hard hat and goggles . you then entered your id to proceed loading if you weren’t wearing them a voice would come across the tannoy and say mr ……. put your gear on please, we were being watched from a control room in leatherhead .
talk about big brother.

Ha, not in my day. We had hard hats, some chose to wear them and some didn’t. Same with earth leads, some did some didn’t. Splash loading was a fairly normal event as well.
And of course wet feet when too busy yapping. TBH I found I banged my head more with a hat than without it!
fair enough, but to be honest it was safer in my time than yours. because your still here to tell the tale dosent make it right, but more likely it was down to lack of knowledge of the dangers and no proper training to them.
Got to agree there M.A.N. Yeah, definitely better now, did a little bit a few years ago, bottom loading etc, worlds apart from the old days.
