Witney Stone Company workshops. Toshboy will confirm but I’m sure these workshops are Ameys at Wootton.
Thats right Nathan, the local operating Companies were allocated the use the servicing bay on regular days/evenings at Wooton by Amey Engineering , the building in the background ,"the bungalow"was Ron Ameys office so everything had to pass that spot -he always knew what was going on ! note the horizontal mixer at entrance–toshboy
I was told today that yes, Coln gravel has shut (the last of the ballast that was under the plant is being dug out) and that Hansons’ are reopening Browns’ pit (Linch Hill lake) at Stanton Harcourt. Stanton premix was reopened a while back, using the plant moved from Coln gravel.
The once mothballed Dix pit complex is coming back to life; Sheehans have planning to expand their recycled gravel plant, and with Hansons’ coming back I can see some rather active NIMBYs in the area…
One of several Wroxton Ironstone Railway locos that survived into preservation. I’ve been told by someone with family connections to past quarry workers that these locos replaced the steam fleet two years or so before the iron ore pits and the rail system were closed down. The operator was losing money by the early '60s so to save money, ordered a load of Rolls Royce engined shunters. Apparently a salesman came to offer them a trial of one, and ended up with a fleet order. Just like the BR branchline diesel locos of the '60s many had no full time work (the quarry workers were on a 3 day week by the end of 1965-66) and the diesels were barely run in when sold by the liquidators in 1967.
These diesels are now at the Rocks to Rail museum at Cottesmore, apparently.
Mine on the left, Dads’ on the right. The V reg is still on “static display” in Smiths yard at Enslow.
I’d like one of these, but the automatic version.
Oh and not in that livery either. Been there, done that, bitterly embarassed and regretted it too.

Now I need to show my boss how this would look nice with the company name on it.
This load of type 1 has had a nice ride. I loaded myself with it in our yard, it came via a Cleaver artic from Hansons’ at Appleford, which had previously had a ride on the train from Somerset, presumably.
And yes it’s still cheaper and less hassle than me collecting it from Hansons’ at Kidlington.
Hi Nathan,
Have you any history of Puzey Bros of Hatford who’s pit was off the X roads opposite now Earthline and next to the recycling centre . or am i too early for your tender years

I remember it being filled, I didn’t know it was Puzeys’ I thought it was a pit of Sands and Gravels, prior to them digging Hatford.
Who dug Dean Pit, at Chadlington? I remember it being a council tip but never went there. It was near Ronnie Barkers’ place at Dean Mill.
I’m a newbie here, I was researching my old mate Percy Prior and came across the site, all those Oxford companies I knew, really interesting, but how do I get back to that section?
