punctures.

since you have been driving hgv,s how many punctures have you had.
in 18 years ive had three.
thats not a bad average

who r the stupid one’s then  you for doing someone else’s job that they get paid to do,or us for not doing someone elses job.bare in mind that these guy’s have the proper equipment to do the job,and the m25 is not the type of road that you’d be wanting to change a tyre.

but you being a bezt driver would do anything to save your boss money.why pay a tyre fitter to do the job when he has got his own mugs oh i mean drivers to do the job for him.

and just a quick question for you, what do you do if you get 2 punctures

Only ever had one puncture and never even knew I had it until the trailer was loaded (was a trailer tyre).

Never had a blow-out.

Most of the firms ive ever worked for changing tyres goes with the job, sure if you work for a nice big company doing uk work you can sit in your nice cab and let some other guy do it for you, but if your in the back of beyond its down to you, it wern’t that many years ago that we used to carry inner tubes and have to change em that way, now days with the advent of the super single we just carry two, one for the truck and one for the trailer, in answer to your question ‘what if you get two puncture’s’ i have been known to (only when all else failed) if its on the trailer to take both sets of and chain up the axle, or what ever other combination works to get you out of trouble.

but i am 17 year old! have not been doing tyre myself but in future i like to do change the tyre on myown, this is challenge and new experience for me!

Also I wonder some of you work for europe but if your truck blow up tyre in Germany for example, what you do ? fix on own or phone somone in germany ?

Cheers Ben :sunglasses:

I had a blow out on my drive axle, made one hell of a bang and left debris everywhere! A definate pant soiling episode :open_mouth:

Would hate to have had it happen on steering axle though?

Difficult to change a wheel without a spare Ben. Many companies in the UK don’t have spares and run on a tyre repair/maintenance contracts. Don’t know if that is as common for the companies that go into Europe or for O/O.

ok your 17,didn’t know that.but when our lads get a blow out or puncture,we will contact a local tyre fitter in that country and authorise them to go and fix it.plus most uk trucks if any don’t carry spares.

i have only ever had one on a 7.5 ton concrete pump on the o/s/f/ the tyre guy was very happy as i just used the outrigger leg to lift it up for him, so he could change the tyre.

I have noticed recently a lot of people who have the tyre companies out to change O/S tyres will have the driver stand near the carriageway to warn him of traffic and heard people say that they insist you stand there while they change it. ■■■■ that theres no way im standing out there im on the near side until hes finished.

If i was in a position to have to change the wheel myself and was given a spanner and a jack by a boss he would be far better waiting for the tyre companies usual 2 hour wait because i i had toi do it it would take a hell of a lot longer.

I have had one tyre blow when driving - fitter came our and changed it.

Found one flat on a trl in yard one day.

Also had to scaryest experience of loose the off side front wheel complete with hub on the A19 dual carrageway one Saturday morning fully loaded. Luck the balance of the Leyland Roadtrain was on the rear axle so balance it to a holt.

Definate change of underwear job.

JUst think of what you job description is…DRIVER…so thats what i do…drive…its not mine so i dont fix it…although in the days of the mid east runs we had to be tyre fitters…mechanics…cook…loaders…unloaders…and that was a different ball game…and the spares we carried would put most companies to shame…injectors…injector pipes…pistons…fuel filters…and a full tool box…plus spare wheels…yes…minimum 2…and we had to change them…in 100% heat too
look at the tyres and that will tell you the company you work for…re-moulds are a no.no. especially on the front…thats where most tyre problems occur…just look at the treads scattered along the motorway…re-moulds…
have a nice day

1 puncture with a cattle trailer.
1 blow out with a 26ton stone screaner on singles so the machine hit the deck with a spectacular display of sparks terifying car drivers then it dug up the rumble strip spraying far and wide. The m40 came to a stand still and I was on Sally Traffic.

If your going to do it, do it right! :sunglasses:

Never had a blow out but I’ve had dozens of flat, soft or damaged tyres.

The curse of agency work - they give you the oldest, scabbiest motor in the yard, and then stare at you incredulously when you tell them that the cord hanging out of the tyre is illegal and you won’t drive it. lol

I once had a blow out on a bus. It made one big bang & left everyone behind me with no visibility due to mud dust.
Once I had prised the finger & toe nails of the poor sod who was sitting over the wheel out of the ceiling, I carefully drove to the terminus, dropped off my passengers & got the tyre changed.
Changing a tyre on a low floor bus is no easy task requiring a lot of back & faward shunting on thin wood blocks to get the Clarence to get a jack under it, as ground clearence is less than 6 inches.

had a flat on a trailer, called em up and out they came…

Wouldn’t dream of changing a tyre or standing on the hard shoulder telling people to move at high speeds.

As i’m aware the tyre companies can and most times will call for police assistance when changing an o/s tyre. don’t blame them to be honest.

Big up to ATS in chichester who saved the day for me… he was nice too!!!

smiles

i had 1 tyre blow out when i was driving wagon and drag,it was the n/s lift axle on the daf in the centre of crawley.

rung the boss up and he asked me if i could continue on to the bakery (delivery point). so i told him if he was going to pay compensation to all the people on the pavement that the flapping bit of tread was going to hit i would happily do it.

needless to say the tyre fitter was there in half an hour. scared me [zb]less when it went :open_mouth:

a mate of mine had a tyre go on the m40 he had to wait 2hrs for the fitter to come out only to be told that he need 2 tyres has it had gashed the inside one as well. . pmsl
